“If I stay in Sekotong, where do I eat?” “Is anything open late?” “What do I do for lunch on an island-hopping day?” Sekotong, in the southwest of Lombok, isn’t a place with streets full of restaurants like Gili Trawangan, so many people ask these questions before they go.
The short answer: there are four kinds of places to eat in Sekotong, and none of them are numerous. There are the beachside cafe and food stalls, the village warungs (small local eateries), hotel restaurants, and warungs on some of the southern Gili islands. At Semelar Beach, SAKURA CAFE and SEMELAR MARKET are open 10:00–22:00, LOCAL FOOD STREET 11:00–22:00, and SAKURA BEACH CLUB 13:00–22:00, and all four are closed on Mondays. On island-hopping days, it’s safest to take water and snacks with you rather than count on lunch being available.
This article brings together only what is already written in the published articles and pages on this site (the Things to do page, our guides to Sekotong’s hotels and villas, the southern Gili islands, and Lombok food, among others). None of those articles confirm the names, prices or closing days of individual warungs in Sekotong, so this article doesn’t list them either. For prices, we show examples reported from Mataram and elsewhere as a reference only.
It’s written for anyone planning to stay in Sekotong or the southern Gilis who wants to sort out meals in advance, whether it’s your first trip to Lombok or not.

The short answer
As of October 2026, places to eat in Sekotong fall into four kinds: beachside cafes and stalls, village warungs, hotel restaurants and island warungs, and there aren’t many of any of them. At Semelar Beach, SAKURA CAFE and SEMELAR MARKET (10:00–22:00), LOCAL FOOD STREET (11:00–22:00) and SAKURA BEACH CLUB (13:00–22:00) are all closed on Mondays. On Mondays and early in the morning, plan on meals at your accommodation or a village warung. On island-hopping days, buy water and snacks on the mainland before you board the boat. The Bamboo Restaurant is scheduled to open on 7 November 2026.
What kinds of places to eat are there in Sekotong?
Sekotong is a fishing-village area about 1 hr 10 min by car from Lombok International Airport and about 40 minutes from Lembar Port. Tourism development is limited, so there are no streets where you can stroll and choose between restaurants, as you can on the three northern Gili islands or in Senggigi. Our guide to Sekotong’s hotels and villas also lists “securing your meals” as one of the things to weigh when choosing where to stay.
Places to eat fall roughly into the four kinds below. Mixing them day by day works better than relying on just one.

| Where | What you can eat | Hours and notes |
|---|---|---|
| Beachside cafe and stalls (Semelar Beach) | Cafe meals, street-stall food | Mostly 10:00–22:00. Closed Mondays |
| Village warungs | Nasi campur, grilled fish, sate, coffee | Morning to night. Hours and closing days depend on the place |
| Hotel and visitor restaurants | Depends on the place. Some serve beer | Ask whether non-guests can eat there |
| Warungs on the southern Gilis | Simple meals. Gili Sudak is said to have a few | Open on some days only. Some islands have none |

When are the four places at Semelar Beach open?
Along the coast road at Semelar Beach (Jl. Raya Sekotong) there are four places run by Semelar Beach Village, the team behind this site, together with people from the village. Their hours are shown in the figure below. All four are closed on Mondays.
Figure: Places to eat along Sekotong Bay and their hours (around Semelar Beach)
SAKURA CAFE (10:00–22:00, closed Mondays) is a cafe facing the beach. In the evening you can sit and watch the sunset. Check the menu and prices when you enquire. Hours and directions are on our SAKURA CAFE page.
SEMELAR MARKET (10:00–22:00, closed Mondays) is a market with street-stall food, daily goods and souvenirs, including Lombok salt and original T-shirts. The stalls change with the seasons. The market says its stalls follow hygiene practices so that visitors from abroad can eat with confidence.
LOCAL FOOD STREET (11:00–22:00, closed Mondays) is a row of bamboo food stalls hung with lanterns. From late afternoon, villagers and travellers share the same tables.
SAKURA BEACH CLUB (13:00–22:00, closed Mondays) is a beach club that opened in 2026. Prices are set for local people, and it serves Japanese and Lombok dishes. You can choose between chairs, gazebos and beanbags on the sand. On clear evenings you can see the sunset together with Mount Agung on Bali.
Note
- Everything is closed on Mondays: all four places share the same closing day. If you arrive in Sekotong on a Monday, or your stay includes one, plan that day’s meals at your accommodation or a village warung.
- Before 10:00: even SAKURA CAFE, the earliest of the four, opens at 10:00. On days when you leave early for the islands, ask your accommodation for breakfast or buy something the day before.
- Menus change: the stalls rotate with the seasons and dishes vary by day. The dishes named here are examples.
What can you eat at a village warung, and how much does it cost?
A warung is a small eatery that local people use every day. The beach warungs in Sekotong serve things like nasi campur (rice with a few side dishes), grilled fish, sate (skewers) and coffee. Fish is mostly ikan bakar: that morning’s catch grilled over charcoal. Lombok’s signature dishes, ayam taliwang (spicy grilled chicken) and plecing kangkung (water spinach with a spicy sauce), are easier to find in Mataram or Senggigi, where there are more specialist places; not many places in Sekotong serve them. The dishes themselves are covered in Lombok’s Signature Dishes.
The articles on this site have not confirmed prices at individual warungs in Sekotong. The closest reference is examples reported elsewhere: Mataram street stalls at Rp15,000–30,000 a plate (about US$0.85–1.70), ayam taliwang at one long-running Mataram restaurant at Rp23,000–25,000 a portion (about US$1.30–1.40), and one seafood warung in Senggigi at Rp30,000–50,000 a plate (about US$1.70–2.80). Each is a single example and not the going rate in Sekotong. US dollar figures use US$1 ≈ Rp17,800 (September 2026).

| Dish or place | Reported price example | Where it comes from (articles on this site) |
|---|---|---|
| Mataram street stalls | Rp15,000–30,000 a plate (about US$0.85–1.70) | Indonesian street food guide, Japanese edition (2025–2026 reports) |
| Ayam taliwang (one long-running restaurant) | Rp23,000–25,000 a portion (about US$1.30–1.40) | Lombok’s Signature Dishes |
| Seafood warung (one in Senggigi) | Rp30,000–50,000 a plate (about US$1.70–2.80) | Seafood in Lombok |
| Warungs in Sekotong | Could not be confirmed | ― |
Each is an example from one place or one area, not the going rate in Sekotong. US$1 ≈ Rp17,800 (September 2026).
Many seafood warungs let you pick a fish, weigh it, and price it by weight. Before ordering, ask the price per fish and whether cooking is charged separately, so the bill doesn’t surprise you. How ordering works is covered in Seafood in Lombok.
Can you eat at hotel restaurants nearby?
There are places to stay with their own restaurants on the Sekotong mainland and on the nearby islands. Examples confirmed on official websites: on the mainland, Cocotinos Sekotong (which has a restaurant called Ela Ela Restaurant) and The Club Villas Lombok; on Gili Gede, the beachfront restaurants at Kokomo Gili Gede, Thamarind Resort Gili Gede and The High Dive. At Sundancer Resort on the mainland, breakfast is free for guests, served as a buffet in high season and ordered from a menu at other times, according to our team’s YouTube channel (video published November 2025).
We could not confirm whether non-guests can eat at these restaurants, or how late they stay open. If you want to eat at a restaurant where you’re not staying, contact them before you go. When booking a place in Sekotong or on the islands, check whether meals are included and whether there’s a restaurant on site, so you don’t have to travel for every meal.
What do you do for lunch on a southern Gili island-hopping day?
The usual way to visit the southern Gili islands off Sekotong is to charter a boat and visit two or three islands in half a day to a full day. There are almost no places to eat on the islands, and where there are, opening depends on the day. Here’s how it looks island by island.
Figure: Where to get lunch on an island-hopping day
Of these three small islands, only Gili Sudak has any information about regular places to eat: a travel blog’s on-the-ground report says there are a few warungs on the island. Opening may vary from day to day, though, so it’s safer not to depend on them. Gili Kedis and Gili Tangkong have no permanent shops. Our guide to Gili Sudak, Kedis and Tangkong also recommends buying water and snacks on the Sekotong side before setting off.
Gili Nanggu has only one place to stay, and food options are limited. Gili Gede is the largest of the southern Gilis; meals there centre on each hotel’s restaurant, and there are very few places to eat outside the hotels. There are no ATMs on the southern Gili islands, and cards are rarely accepted. How to arrange an island-hopping boat and check what the price includes is covered in the Sekotong boat charter guide. Decide when you book whether to take a tour with lunch included or charter just the boat and bring your own food.
What should you know about paying, spice, alcohol and water?
Cash is the norm at warungs and stalls. Reported stall prices run to a few tens of thousands of rupiah a plate, so small notes make paying much quicker than large ones. There are few convenience stores and ATMs in Sekotong, so get enough cash when you’re in town.
Lombok is majority Muslim, and there’s no pork in village food. Dishes use plenty of chili, but just ask and they’ll make it less spicy. In Indonesian, “tidak pedas” means “not spicy”. Alcohol is very unlikely at local warungs; it’s limited to places aimed at visitors and to hotels. More detail is in Lombok’s Food Guide.
Drink sealed bottled water. Whether ice is safe depends on the place. Avoiding raw food, cut fruit and food that has gone cold, and choosing dishes grilled or fried in front of you and served hot, lowers the risk of an upset stomach. If you have allergies or follow a strict vegetarian diet, tell them in advance: even dishes that look like plain vegetables often contain shrimp paste (terasi).
What is the Bamboo Restaurant opening on 7 November?
At Semelar Beach, the Bamboo Restaurant, built together with local craftspeople, is scheduled to hold its grand opening on 7 November 2026. It’s a two-storey bamboo building: the ground floor is a garden restaurant surrounded by flower beds, and from the upper floor you can see the mountains and the sea. It will be open 10:00–22:00 and closed on Mondays. The menu has not been decided yet and will be posted on the Things to do page when it opens. The background is in the grand opening announcement.
Once it opens, there will be one more place to eat at Semelar Beach. Like the four places above, though, it will be closed on Mondays. If you’re staying from November onwards, still plan on everything being closed on Mondays.
A note from Sekotong
What catches people out with food in Sekotong is less the small number of places than the limited hours and days they’re open. When you plan a day, decide first where you’ll have breakfast, lunch and dinner, and you won’t be caught short. Mondays and days when you leave early for the islands need the most care. At fishing-village warungs, the menu depends on what fish came in that day. Rather than setting your heart on a particular dish, asking what they can make once you arrive usually works out better.
Sekotong isn’t for people who want to eat their way around
To be honest, Sekotong doesn’t suit people who want lots of choice when it comes to food. There are few places to eat, they close by 22:00, and on Mondays all four places at Semelar Beach are closed at once. Cross to the islands and options shrink further. If you want Western or international food at every meal, easy access to alcohol, or places to go late into the night, the three northern Gili islands, Senggigi or Kuta (Mandalika) will suit you better.
On the other hand, having that day’s fish grilled for you, eating at the same table as people from the village, and watching the sunset from a beachside place in the evening are things you can do precisely because this is a fishing village with few places to eat. It suits people who want food close to how locals eat, even if simple, and who want to spend a few days by a quiet sea.
The Semelar Beach Village stay programme (3 nights/4 days to 5 nights/6 days, Rp4,800,000 per person, about US$270) includes airport transfers, transport during your stay, a guide and a massage, plus a welcome dinner. Flights, accommodation and meals not listed are extra. You can also talk to us about how to plan meals during your stay.

Just ask and they’ll make it less spicy. Say “tidak pedas”. Asking whether the sambal (chili relish) can be served on the side is another option.
