Ways to be involved

Beyond staying with us, you can live here for a few months, open a shop, or lend a hand with farming and craft work. Conversations about land and buildings come after you have visited at least once.

Whichever it is, please stay with us first and then think it over. We don’t recommend deciding without seeing the village.

Four ways

Where to start

We are looking for owners for some of the thirteen villas.

    OverviewEach option in detail

All the ways to be involved

    Eight options (overview)
    1

    Keep a base

A room in the villa that stays yours. In the months you are away it is used as guest accommodation; in the months you come, you come home to it. Just being able to leave your things here changes the way you travel. This is for people who come back two or three times a year.

How costs work, choosing a room, and what happens in the months you don’t come will be decided in line with the villa opening.

    2

    Own a home

Building a house in the village and living next to village life, with village carpenters and village materials. Land rules are not simple for foreigners, and we explain that reality honestly at the first conversation.

    3

    Land

In Indonesia, foreigners cannot own land. What is possible is a long-term right of use, or an arrangement through a local company. We write down what is possible and what is risky before recommending anything.

    4

    Open a shop

Opening a small shop on the beach together with people from the village. It could sell coffee, or pearl craft. We start from what the village needs. A shop the villagers use lasts longer than one aimed at tourists.

    5

    Live here

Trying out life here, from a few months. Visas, living costs, healthcare and internet are all part of the reality. Starting with one month is the realistic way in.

    6

    Space

A few people, a few weeks, focused time in front of the sea: making things, research, retreats. We talk it through together, including the limits as a workplace (internet and power).

    7

    Take on a role

Joining in with village work: showing guests around, the pearl rafts, the fields, the boats. The longer people stay, the more naturally a role takes shape. Whether it is paid, and how it relates to your visa, is discussed case by case.

    8

    Villa owner

Owning one of the thirteen villas and taking part in running it. As this sits close to investment, details are on the project’s official site.

    Steps

    How it goes

    Four steps
    1. 1

      Stay

Start with a week. See the village.

    2. 2

      Come back

On your second visit, people in the village remember your name.

    3. 3

      A role appears

Guiding, the fields, the boats. Your hands start to find things to do.

    4. 4

      Take a seat

A base, a shop, living here. This is when we first talk about rules and costs.

    Honestly

    Rules and risks

    Rules and risks (honestly)
    • Foreigners cannot own land. Rights of use and company structures come with time limits and conditions.
    • Your visa depends on how you stay. You cannot work on a tourist visa.
    • The rupiah moves. Long-term costs cannot be fixed in your home currency.
    • The village’s agreement comes first. There is little we can decide on our own.
    • Plans made before opening will change. When they do, we will update this page.
    FAQ
Can I just talk it through without staying?
Yes. But things move faster once you have seen the village, so we suggest staying once first.
    How much does it cost?
It varies by an order of magnitude depending on the option. A base is an extension of a stay; a shop or a house involves rules and construction. At the first conversation we give you a range that fits your plan.
Can I get involved while keeping my job back home?
That is what a “base” you return to a few times a year, or a few weeks of “space”, is for. We will be honest about the limits of the internet connection.
