In short
Staying on the main island, Bonjeruk in Central Lombok is the easy choice; in the north, the farm in Bayan; in the hill village of Tetebatu, the walk with cooking; on the Gilis, the Gili Air class. Most do not include transport, so arrange your ride there and back first.
What do you cook in a Lombok cooking class?
Lombok’s best-known dishes are ayam taliwang, a spicy grilled chicken from the Karang Taliwang area of Mataram, and plecing kangkung, a water spinach salad. Others include sate rembiga, a sweet and spicy beef satay from Rembiga in Mataram; nasi balap puyung, rice with spicy shredded chicken from Puyung in Central Lombok; and sate tanjung, a fish satay from North Lombok (Good News From Indonesia, February 2025).
In the classes you make dishes such as Sasak-style nasi goreng, satay, fried tempeh (fermented soybean), gado-gado with peanut sauce and klepon (coconut rice balls). The dishes themselves are described in our guide to Lombok’s local dishes.
The Sasak cooking class in Bonjeruk village (Central Lombok)
On Expedia’s sales page, a Sasak cooking class runs in the tourism village of Bonjeruk in Jonggat district, Central Lombok. It starts at 8:00 and lasts about three hours (three to four in the description), at AU$66.61 per person including taxes and fees, with lower per-person prices for larger groups.
You make Sasak-style nasi goreng, sate kuncung, pepes jamur (mushrooms steamed in leaves), a cucumber salad, fried tempeh and fried banana, six dishes that may change with the season. A local instructor, a herbal welcome drink, ingredients and equipment, a village-style lunch, water, recipe notes and a donation to the village are included. Transport to the village is not included, although pickup from some areas can be booked separately.
A farm in Bayan, and a walk in Tetebatu
The experience site Seek Sophie lists a class at Saifana Organic Farm in Bayan, North Lombok. It lasts 2.5 to 3 hours, costs from Rp362,250 per person and takes up to six people. You harvest vegetables from the farm garden and cook two vegetable dishes, two protein dishes and a local dessert on a wood-fired stove, then share the meal with coffee and take the recipes home. Transport is extra: Rp777,285 from North Lombok, Rp910,800 from the airport area and Rp1,036,035 from the Kuta area or East Lombok (each for up to four people). Cancel seven days ahead for a full refund.
In the hill village of Tetebatu in East Lombok, Blissful Paradise Indonesia offers a four-hour walk through rice terraces, bamboo forest, a hidden waterfall and a forest with black monkeys, combined with cooking (Expedia, US$45.05 per person). The three-hour walk alone is US$37.55, with a guide, water, entrance tickets, lunch and insurance included. The meeting point is a warung in the village. The village and how to get there are in our Tetebatu guide.
Classes on Gili Air and Gili Trawangan
Gili Cooking Classes on Gili Air runs every day at 11:30, 16:00 and in the evening (19:00 or 20:00) (Expedia). The 1.5-hour intro course is US$39 and covers klepon, fried tempeh with peanut sauce and fried noodles. The two-hour course (US$43) adds yellow chicken curry, and the 2.5-hour course (US$46) adds ayam taliwang and gado-gado. The same page also gives the activity duration as 2 hours, so check the length when you book.
Airbnb lists a Gili Trawangan cooking class of about two hours from US$36 per person, for up to ten guests aged five and over, taught in English, with an average of 4.92 from 79 ratings. The meeting point, however, is listed as Pemenang on mainland Lombok, which does not match the title, so check where it is before booking. Gili Air itself is covered in our Gili Air guide.

Choosing by where you stay
Choose a class near where you are staying to keep driving time and transport costs down. On the Gilis, take the Gili Air class; at the foot of Rinjani in the north, Bayan; in Tetebatu, the Tetebatu walk; and from the middle of the main island or from Kuta or Mataram, Bonjeruk village.
Figure: Choosing a cooking class
Before booking, check whether transport is included, whether you get money back if you cancel, and whether meat or chilli can be left out. On the Expedia pages for Tetebatu and Gili Air, “free cancellation” and “non-refundable” both appeared on the same page.
A note from Sekotong
As of 1 November 2026 we could not confirm any cooking class for visitors in Sekotong. You can eat local food at the LOCAL FOOD STREET stalls (11:00 to 22:00) and SEMELAR MARKET (10:00 to 22:00, closed Mondays). You can practise ordering at a food stall in Order at the Market.
Downsides, and who a cooking class suits
First the downsides. Prices and details come from sales pages and were not confirmed directly with the people running the classes. Most classes do not include transport, and depending on where you stay, the drive can be over an hour each way. Some pages contradicted themselves on cancellation.
A class suits anyone who wants to make local food with their own hands, families who want a half-day activity with children, and anyone who wants a plan ready for a rainy day. The Semelar Beach Village stay programme (3 nights/4 days to 5 nights/6 days, Rp4,800,000 per person) includes a welcome dinner, airport transfers, local transport, a guide and a massage; flights and accommodation are separate. Eating in Sekotong is covered in Where to eat in Sekotong, and what you can do in the village on Things to Do.
