When you travel to Lombok with older parents, the most useful thing you can do is cut the number and length of journeys. Lombok has no long-haul direct flights, so keep to one connection, and base yourselves somewhere close to the airport, such as Sekotong, about 1 hour 10 minutes by car, so travel days are less tiring.
For this guide we read the Australian government’s travel advice (Smartraveller), Changi Airport’s wheelchair page, a wheelchair travel site, a guide to boarding boats at Bangsal harbour and the climate site weather2travel on 1 November 2026, and set out what to plan for in transport, boats, heat and medical care.
This guide is for anyone planning Lombok with parents in their 60s or older, or with three generations travelling together.

In short
One connection, a short drive from the airport, and one or two bases. Book wheelchair help with the airline when you buy your tickets, and keep boats to short trips on calm days. Rest in the hot middle of the day, and take insurance that covers treatment and evacuation.
How to cut connections and driving time
International flights to Lombok come only from Kuala Lumpur and Singapore, so most visitors change planes in Bali, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur or Singapore. Routes are covered in Getting to Lombok. With parents, choose a single connection that does not require leaving the airport between flights.
From Lombok International Airport it is about 1 hour 10 minutes by car to Sekotong, and about 40 minutes from Sekotong to Lembar harbour. Driving times around the island are in our Lombok travel times guide. Each time you change hotel you pack up and spend one to two hours in a car, so keep to one or two bases.
Figure: Planning journeys with parents
On a late arrival you can stay near the airport and move on in daylight. What to do when you land late is in our guide to arriving at Lombok Airport at night.
How to book wheelchair help at the airport
According to Changi Airport, wheelchair assistance is provided by the airline, and you should request it when you book your flight, ideally at least 48 hours before departure. For requests made less than 48 hours ahead, contact the airline directly. Airline staff may ask whether you can walk short distances to judge the help needed. Waits can be longer at busy times, and some airlines charge, so check when you book.
The wheelchair travel site wheelchairtravel.org (updated 3 August 2026) also advises contacting the airline directly after buying your ticket and giving advance notice. Changi Airport also has free wheelchairs for use within the airport.
Take care
- Request wheelchair help on every flight, including connections
- Tell the airline how far your parent can walk
- Check whether there is a charge when you book
Boats: at the Gilis you wade out to board
Fast boats from Bangsal harbour in northwest Lombok to the Gili Islands are boarded by wading through shallow water (unchartedlens). Crew carry bags from the shallows or the jetty onto the boat, and porters expect a tip. The guide suggests carrying cash for tips and a waterproof bag for anything that must stay dry. Large hard suitcases are awkward and a backpack or waterproof bag is easier, and the guide recommends a private car and boat transfer for families and travellers with mobility concerns, for a smoother, more assisted trip.
South Gili island hopping off Sekotong uses small boats on short crossings, but how you board varies by harbour and beach. With parents, ask about steps and wading when you book the boat, and keep to short trips on calm days. The Australian government warns that Indonesian boats may not carry enough life jackets and advises against boat travel at night, in wet weather or in storms.

Heat and sun: rest in the middle of the day
weather2travel’s Mataram averages give highs of about 31°C in November and December, with a UV index of “11+ (extreme)”. Spend time outdoors in the morning and late afternoon, and rest at the hotel or a cafe when the sun is high to reduce the strain.
A hat, sunscreen, light long sleeves and plenty of water are the basics. Pack regular medicines in hand luggage so a delayed bag on a connection does not leave you without them.
Medical care and what to check in travel insurance
The Australian government’s travel advice (Smartraveller) says many regional hospitals in Indonesia offer only basic facilities and advises comprehensive travel insurance covering all medical costs, including emergency treatment and medical evacuation. Indonesia’s number for ambulance and rescue is 118, and for medical emergencies 119.
Cover and conditions can change with age, so before you go, confirm with the insurer that your parent’s age and any existing conditions are covered. Hospitals on Lombok are covered in our Lombok hospitals and insurance guide, and passports and entry rules in Lombok Travel Essentials.
- ✓Insurance covers treatment and medical evacuation
- ✓Your parent’s age and existing conditions are covered
- ✓Medicines and copies of prescriptions in hand luggage
- ✓You know the nearest hospital and the drive to Mataram
How many nights, and how to plan each day
With parents, a slightly longer stay with fewer plans each day works better. For a 3-night stay, for example, split it into an arrival day, a sea day and a departure day, and rest at the hotel on the afternoon of the sea day. Keep arrival and departure days for travel only, and alternate sea days and rest days in between so tiredness does not build up.
How to decide on nights in Sekotong is covered in How many nights in Sekotong?. For island hopping, leave in the cool of the morning and be back by early afternoon.
A note from Sekotong
Sekotong is about 1 hour 10 minutes by car from the airport and 40 minutes from Lembar harbour, one of the stretches of coast closest to the airport on Lombok. The beach cafe SAKURA CAFE is open 10:00 to 22:00 (closed Mondays), a place to rest in the shade and look at the sea when the sun is high.
Downsides, and how to make a trip with parents work
First the downsides. There are no long-haul direct flights, so with a connection the journey takes a full day. Regional hospitals offer basic care, and some boats involve wading or steps. In November and December highs are about 31°C and the sun is strong.
Even so, with one connection, a base near the airport and transfers arranged in advance, you can spend a quiet seaside trip together. The Semelar Beach Village stay programme runs from 3 nights/4 days to 5 nights/6 days at Rp4,800,000 per person, including airport transfers, local transport, a guide, a welcome dinner and a massage; flights and accommodation are separate. Where you can stay is on our Stay page and the route from the airport on Getting Here.
Frequently asked questions
Q. Can I take elderly parents to Lombok?
Yes. One connection, a base near the airport and a transfer booked in advance keep the travel manageable.
Q. Can I get a wheelchair at the airport?
Ask the airline when you book. Changi Airport advises requesting it ideally at least 48 hours before departure. Some airlines charge.
Q. Are the boats to the Gilis hard to board?
Fast boats at Bangsal are boarded by wading through shallow water. If mobility is a concern, book a private car and boat transfer with assistance.
Q. Are Lombok’s hospitals adequate?
The Australian government says many regional hospitals offer only basic facilities. Take insurance that covers treatment and medical evacuation.
Q. How many nights should we stay?
A slightly longer stay so each day has fewer plans. Keep travel days for travel only and include rest days.
Summary
Taking parents to Lombok is easier with one connection and a base close to the airport, such as Sekotong, about 1 hour 10 minutes by car. Book wheelchair help with the airline when you buy tickets, and know that boats to the Gilis are boarded by wading.
Rest in the heat of the day, keep boats to short trips on calm days, and take insurance that covers treatment and evacuation, checking age and existing conditions before you go (as of November 2026).
