Where to Stay in Kuta Lombok or Senggigi: Areas and Price Ranges

“Should I stay in Kuta Lombok or in Senggigi?” “Within each area, which part should I book?” “How much should I budget per night?” When you start looking for a place to stay on Lombok, these two names come up first.

In short, Kuta Lombok (Mandalika) on the south coast is close to the airport and is where the surf, the southern beaches and the newer resorts are. Senggigi on the west coast is Lombok’s older resort strip, with hotels and restaurants along a sunset-facing shore and easy access to the port for the Gili Islands. Which one suits you depends on whether you want waves and southern beaches or easy trips to the Gilis. Within each area, you then decide between a central spot where you can walk to restaurants and a quieter spot further out.

This article uses only what we could confirm on Indonesia’s official tourism site (indonesia.travel), in hotel operators’ announcements and in Indonesian news reports. We do not rank hotels; the places listed by the official tourism site are used only as price examples. It is written for first-time visitors to Lombok and for anyone deciding between the two areas.

In short

Choose Kuta Lombok if you are coming for surfing or the southern beaches and want a short airport transfer. Choose Senggigi if you are combining Lombok with the Gili Islands, or if a sunset shoreline with plenty of restaurants matters most. In Kuta, pick between the town centre (around Jl. Raya Kuta), the Mandalika resort zone, or the quieter Selong Belanak side to the west. In Senggigi, pick between the centre, Batu Bolong to the south, or Mangsit to the north. Homestays around Kuta listed on the official tourism site start from Rp300,000 a night (checked October 2026). In MotoGP and other event weeks both areas fill up, so check the dates first.

How are Kuta Lombok and Senggigi different?

The two areas are on different sides of the island. Kuta Lombok is a town on the south coast in Central Lombok Regency, and the area around it is part of The Mandalika, a special tourism economic zone that the government is developing. It is not the same place as Kuta in Bali. Indonesia’s official tourism site lists Kuta, Tanjung Aan, Gerupuk, Serenting and Seger as the beaches around Mandalika, and says the zone has luxury hotels and resorts as well as golf courses and nightlife.

Being close to the airport is Kuta’s strength. Accor, the hotel operator, says its Pullman Lombok Mandalika Beach Resort is about 20 minutes from Lombok International Airport. Our Kuta Lombok (Mandalika) guide puts the drive to the town centre at about 30 to 40 minutes.

Senggigi, on the west coast in West Lombok Regency, is the part of Lombok that was developed for tourism earliest. According to the official tourism site, the Sheraton Senggigi Beach Resort is at kilometre 8 of Jalan Raya Senggigi, the coastal main road; it opened in 1991 and is about 50 km from Lombok International Airport. Senggigi is close to Mataram, the provincial capital, and about 30 km from Bangsal, the port for the Gili Islands (figures from our Senggigi and Mataram guide).

Getting from one area to the other means crossing the island, so if you plan to stay in both, set aside a day for the move. For the bigger picture of where to base yourself, including Sekotong and the Gili Islands, see Where to base yourself in Lombok.

Where in Kuta Lombok should I stay?

Places to stay around Kuta fall into three broad locations. The first is the town centre. The addresses of the places listed on the official tourism site show small lodgings along Jl. Raya Kuta and along Jl. Pariwisata Pantai Kuta, the road to the beach. The site describes one place as close to “Kuta’s main street and Kuta Beach”, another as less than a kilometre from Kuta Beach, and a homestay as within walking distance of the beach. Being able to walk to restaurants is the advantage here.

The second is the resorts in the Mandalika development zone. Accor says the Pullman has 257 rooms plus suites and villas, set in a secluded bay surrounded by hills. For the Novotel Lombok Resort and Villas, the official tourism site mentions a private beach, a kids club and a dive centre. The resorts are close to the circuit, which makes them an option if you are coming for a race. On the other hand, from many of them you need a car to reach the town centre, so if you want to eat out in the evening, check transfers or ride-hailing in advance.

The third is quieter places away from town. The official tourism site describes a guesthouse on the Selong Belanak side, to the west, as 30 minutes by car from Kuta and a 10-minute walk from the beach. Places on Jl. Baturiti and in Mengalung are described as 12 to 15 minutes from the circuit. It is quieter, but you need a car or scooter for every meal and shopping trip. Gerupuk is a bay the official tourism site describes as a place for swimming, surfing and fishing.

Where in Senggigi should I stay?

In Senggigi the places to stay are strung out along the coastal main road, so where you are along that road changes how your stay feels. The travel guide Travelfish divides Senggigi like this.

The centre (around Senggigi Beach and the bay) is the busiest part, with most of the restaurants, bars and travel agents, and Travelfish also mentions touts. Places range from budget guesthouses to resorts. If you want to walk to restaurants, this is the part for you.

Batu Bolong and Batu Layar, to the south, are beaches with a mix of budget places and small upmarket resorts. Travelfish says they are not a comfortable walk from the centre. They lie towards Mataram, and the Hindu temple Pura Batu Bolong stands on a headland by the coast road (from our Senggigi and Mataram guide).

Kerandangan and Mangsit, to the north, are the beaches north of the centre. Travelfish says Kerandangan, around the headland from the Sheraton, has just a few midrange places, while Mangsit, further on, is the more upmarket stretch. The Katamaran Resort, covered in our Lombok luxury hotels and villas guide, is in Mangsit. It is easier to have a quiet stay here, but you will need a car to get to the shops in the centre.

As examples of Senggigi resorts, the official tourism site describes the Aruna Senggigi Resort and Convention as a 4-star resort a few steps from Senggigi Beach, with an airport shuttle at extra charge. For the Sheraton, it lists 154 rooms and suites, a pool, a spa and a kids’ play area.

Be aware that Senggigi is not as lively as it once was. Our Senggigi vs. Mataram guide cites a May 2026 news report that some hotels’ occupancy had fallen to around 20 to 30 percent.

How much should I budget per night?

Prices on booking sites change a lot from day to day, so here we only use the “from” prices listed on Indonesia’s official tourism site and the Ministry of Tourism’s village tourism portal. They are all minimum rates and go up depending on the season and the room. The pages do not give a publication date, so confirm the price with the place directly before you book.

For midrange and upscale resorts, official websites usually show no rate until you enter dates, and we could not confirm figures for this article. Does everything fill up in event weeks?

In weeks with a big event at the circuit, hotels around Kuta fill first, then the demand spreads to Senggigi and Mataram. In October 2025 the business daily Bisnis.com quoted the head of the West Nusa Tenggara tourism office as saying that, for MotoGP, hotels in the Mandalika area were 100 percent full, Mataram was at 90 percent, Senggigi at over 80 percent, and the average across Lombok was 93 percent.

It is not only MotoGP. In July 2026 the national news agency Antara reported that, ahead of a running event at the circuit (about 9,000 runners), some hotels in the Mandalika special economic zone were fully booked and the Pullman and Novotel were above 90 percent. The official tourism site lists Round 5 of the Mandalika Racing Series for 6 to 8 November 2026.

Outside event weeks, rooms are usually easier to find. In July 2025, Good News From Indonesia reported average occupancy of 29.09 percent at the Pullman and 43.54 percent at the Novotel (the article does not say which period these averages cover). If your dates are flexible, check the circuit’s calendar first; simply avoiding an event week widens your choice of places to stay.

Caution

  • Check event dates first: MotoGP, the racing series and running events are scheduled by their organisers and change every year. Check before you book.
  • Commuting from Senggigi: roads are busy in event weeks too. If you stay in Senggigi or Mataram and travel to the circuit, allow plenty of time.

What should I ask the hotel before booking?

Even within one area, the exact location and facilities make a big difference to how comfortable your stay is. It helps to message the place before booking about things the photos do not show.

Figure: Six things to check before booking

1 Exact location Beach side or inland side of the main road 2 Walking distance Can you walk to restaurants and the beach 3 Room Air conditioning or fan, hot water 4 Transfers Airport or port pick-up and its cost 5 Dates Do they clash with an event at the circuit 6 Payment Cards accepted, or cash only
Figure: Based on this article and the checklist in our budget guesthouses guide (October 2026).

For location, ask which side of the main road the place is on, not just where the map pin is. Where places line a coastal road, as in Senggigi, from the inland side you cross the road to reach the beach. In Kuta, too, being on the main street or on a quieter side road changes the noise at night. Walking distance decides where you eat in the evening. At places outside town and at the resorts, dinner every night means eating in or going out by car.

For the room, several of the places on the official tourism site offer fan rooms. If you do not cope well with heat, check for air conditioning and hot water. Some places offer transfers for a fee. For payment, smaller places are more likely to be cash only. Also note that in Indonesia, accommodation providers must report foreign guests’ details to the immigration authorities, so you will be asked to show your passport at check-in (from our budget guesthouses guide).

A note from Sekotong

On Lombok, the location of a place on Google Maps sometimes does not match its actual entrance. Once you have booked, message the place to confirm its exact location and how far a car can drive in, so you do not get lost even if you arrive at night.

Weak points of Kuta and Senggigi, and who each suits

Kuta Lombok’s weak points are that it is still mid-development, and that hotels fill up and prices rise in event weeks. Senggigi’s weak points are that it has not regained its former liveliness and that it is about 50 km from the airport. If clear water and white sand matter most, the Gili Islands or the South Gilis may suit you better.

Kuta suits people who want to surf or explore the southern beaches, who want short transfers on arrival and departure days, or who want to watch an event at the circuit. Senggigi suits people combining Lombok with the Gili Islands, people who want dinner by the sea at sunset, and people who also want to use Mataram for shopping.

There is also the option of staying in a quiet fishing village, different from both. We are Semelar Beach Village. In a fishing village in Sekotong, in southwest Lombok, we run a beach cafe (SAKURA CAFE, 10:00 to 22:00, closed Mondays), a market and a beach club together with local Sasak people. The village is about 1 hour 10 minutes by car from Lombok International Airport and about 40 minutes from Lembar Port. Our 13 private villas are under construction, and the first is due to be completed in early 2027 (plan as of August 2026). What you can book now is a stay programme of 3 nights to 5 nights (Rp4,800,000 per person, about US$270, including airport transfers, transport during the stay, a guide, a welcome dinner and a massage; flights and accommodation are not included). Places to stay in Sekotong are covered in Sekotong hotels and villas.

Frequently asked questions

Q. For a first trip to Lombok, is Kuta or Senggigi better?

It depends on the purpose of your trip. If you are coming for surfing or the southern beaches and want a short airport transfer, Kuta. If you are combining Lombok with the Gili Islands, Senggigi, close to Bangsal port, is easier.

Q. Is Kuta Lombok the same as Kuta in Bali?

No. Kuta Lombok is a town on the south coast of Lombok, in Central Lombok Regency. It shares the name with Kuta in Bali, so check the island when you search or book.

Q. Should I stay in Kuta town or at a Mandalika resort?

If you want to eat out in the evening and walk to the beach, the town centre. If you will spend a lot of time at the pool and restaurants of your hotel, or want a kids club for your children, a Mandalika resort suits you better. From the resorts you need a car to get into town.

Q. Can I stay in Senggigi and travel to MotoGP?

You can, but during the 2025 event Senggigi’s occupancy was reported at over 80 percent. With the distance (about 50 km to the airport) and the race-day traffic, you need to book early and allow plenty of travel time.

Summary

Kuta Lombok is a south-coast town close to the airport; Senggigi is the older west-coast resort strip, close to the port for the Gili Islands. Once you have chosen an area, decide between a central spot within walking distance of restaurants and a resort zone or quieter spot further out (October 2026).

Homestays around Kuta listed on the official tourism site start from Rp300,000 a night. Both areas fill up quickly in event weeks at the circuit, so check the dates first, and before booking confirm the exact location, the room facilities, transfers and payment methods with the place directly.
