Which Gili should you stay on: Trawangan, Air or Meno? How much more does a pool villa cost than a guesthouse? And on islands with no cars, how do you get your bags from the boat to your room? These questions come up as soon as you start looking for a place to stay in the Gili Islands. The short answer: the feel of your stay is decided mostly by which island you pick. After that, checking the distance from the harbour to your room, plus the water, the cooling and the noise at night, avoids most booking mistakes.
As a rule of thumb, choose Gili Trawangan if you want to be out in the evenings, Gili Air if you want something between lively and quiet, and Gili Meno if quiet comes first. Prices run from shared dorm beds to pool villas at several million rupiah a night.
This guide draws on the Indonesian Ministry of Tourism’s official site, the official websites of the places to stay, Indonesian news reports (detikBali, the state broadcaster RRI and others) and a university research paper, and includes only what could be confirmed as of October 2026. Prices are those shown on official sites or in reports, given as rough guides with their dates. Where public information could not confirm something, such as room rates on Gili Meno, we say so. This is not a recommendation of any particular hotel.
It is written for travellers planning to reach the Gilis via Bali who want to decide which of the three islands to stay on, for how many nights, and in what price range. Getting to the islands and what to do on each are covered in other guides; this one is about choosing where to sleep.

In short
Pick the island first (lively Trawangan, in-between Air, quiet Meno), then look at how far your room is from the harbour. Prices confirmed as of October 2026: dorm beds on Trawangan from US$16.50, budget bungalows at Rp200,000 to 500,000 a night (about US$11 to 28), and mid-range to upscale hotels reported at Rp660,000 to 5,220,000 a night (about US$37 to 293). Groundwater on the islands is brackish, and the fresh-water supply failed again in September 2026, so ask before booking whether showers use fresh water and what happens during a water cut. Staying two nights or more gives you at least one day without a boat transfer.
Which of the three Gilis should you stay on? Start with the island’s character
The Indonesian Ministry of Tourism’s official site describes Gili Trawangan as the largest and most popular of the three, with a lively nightlife after sunset. Gili Air is the closest to the mainland and has the largest population, and Gili Meno is the smallest, with a few hundred permanent residents and the most secluded feel. Cars and motorbikes are banned on all three islands; you get around by bicycle or by cidomo, a small horse-drawn cart.
Trawangan has the most places to stay and the widest range, along with most of the bars and restaurants. It suits people who want to eat out and hear music at night, and solo travellers who want to meet others. The flip side is that, depending on where you stay, music can carry late into the night. The official site of one Trawangan hostel says quiet hours start at 11 pm, but also notes that bars may play loud music until late.
Air sits in the middle: not as lively at night as Trawangan, not as empty as Meno. Being closest to the mainland, it is the easiest base if you plan to travel back and forth to Lombok. Meno suits people who want quiet and early nights, with fewer choices for food and shopping in return.

What do rooms cost? From dorms to luxury villas
Accommodation in the Gilis ranges from shared dorms and fan-only budget bungalows to mid-range and upscale hotels and resorts, and villas with private pools. The table below gathers the prices we could confirm on official sites or in news reports, as rough guides. Rates change with the season, the room and how you book, so always check the final total on the booking screen.
← Scroll the table sideways
| Type | Example prices confirmed | Source and caveats |
|---|---|---|
| Dorm (shared room) | US$16.50 to 19.01 per bed per night (Trawangan) | Direct-booking rates on the hostel’s official site, checked October 2026. Breakfast not included, guests 18 and over only |
| Budget bungalow | Examples at Rp200,000 to 500,000 a night, about US$11 to 28 (Trawangan) | Ministry of Tourism official site. No publication date given. Some rooms are fan-only with no hot water |
| Mid-range to upscale hotel | Rp660,000 to 5,220,000 a night, about US$37 to 293 (seven hotels on Trawangan) | News report, December 2024 (detikBali). Range across room types. Source of the rates and the dates they apply to not stated |
| Pool villa | One-bedroom from 195 euros, two-bedroom from 350 euros (Air) | “FROM” prices on the villa’s official site, checked October 2026. Not stated whether per night, whether tax and service are included, or which dates apply |
Note: US dollar figures for rupiah prices use US$1 = about Rp17,800 (September 2026). Euro prices are not converted. Room rates on Gili Meno could not be confirmed on official sites.
Private rooms at the same hostel cost noticeably more than dorms: tent-style rooms from US$34.10 a night and bungalows from US$59.26 (prices shown before entering dates). Among the budget bungalows featured by the Ministry of Tourism, some rooms are fan-only without hot water, while another example has air conditioning and hot showers in every room for Rp450,000 a night (about US$25), so facilities vary a lot within the same price band. The page carries no publication date, though, so these rates may no longer apply.
For mid-range to upscale, detikBali featured seven Trawangan hotels for the year-end holidays in December 2024. The cheapest room was Rp660,000 a night (about US$37) and the most expensive Rp5,220,000 (about US$293). The report does not say where the rates came from or which dates they apply to, so treat them only as a sense of the range. The official websites of the Gili Meno places we looked at did not show prices, and we could not confirm the price range on Gili Meno.
Caution
- Currencies and taxes are shown differently from place to place: some list prices in US dollars, some in euros, some in rupiah, and they are not consistent about whether tax and service are included. Compare the total shown at the last step of booking.
- The cheaper the room, the more carefully you should check the facilities: within the same price band, rooms differ on air conditioning and hot water. Read the facility list rather than going by photos.
Getting your luggage from the harbour to your room on islands without cars
Because cars and motorbikes are banned in the Gilis, once you land you walk, cycle or take a cidomo to your accommodation. According to the Ministry of Tourism, a cidomo is a small horse-drawn cart that seats up to three people. With a large suitcase, in rain, or arriving after dark, the distance from the jetty to your room becomes a real burden.
Gili Eco Trust, an environmental group based on Trawangan, says most hotels, hostels and resorts on Trawangan are less than a 20-minute walk from the harbour area. It advises travellers to look up where their accommodation is before arriving, and to choose places that look after horses (for example by providing water and shade for waiting horses). If you are concerned about how cidomo horses are treated, one option is to pick a place near the harbour and walk.
Some places offer transfers. Pondok Santi Estate, at the southern end of Trawangan, says guests who book two nights or more directly on its official site get a free cidomo transfer to or from the harbour. The wording does not make clear whether this is one way or both ways, so confirm when you book.
On Gili Meno, BASK Gili Meno’s official site explains that all public boats arrive on the east side of the island and that you need a horse cart from there. It also says guests using the resort’s own speedboat are dropped right in front of the property. Before you book, ask which jetty you will arrive at, how long it takes from there to your room, and whether a transfer is offered, so you are not left guessing on the day.
From mainland Lombok, boats cross from Bangsal harbour. According to the travel site tiket.com (updated June 2026), the wooden public boat to Gili Trawangan costs Rp23,000 to 25,000 per person (about US$1.30 to 1.40, 30 to 45 minutes, leaving when full), and fast boats cost Rp85,000 to 100,000 (15 to 20 minutes). BASK Gili Meno’s site says boats run hourly from 9 am to 5 pm for Rp85,000 and take 20 to 30 minutes, without saying which boat it means. Fares and times can change, so check at the harbour on the day. How the harbour works and how to deal with touts are covered in our Bangsal harbour guide.
What to check before booking: cooling, fresh-water showers, water and power cuts
Water is the thing most often overlooked when choosing a room in the Gilis. A paper published in 2016 by researchers at the University of Mataram found that groundwater on Gili Trawangan, drawn from wells about 10 m deep, is brackish, and that roughly 90 percent of the fresh water used by residents and the tourism industry was supplied by a company that treats water to make it fresh. In other words, fresh water on the island depends on outside supply and treatment plants.
That supply has failed more than once. In October 2024, detikBali reported water shortages across the three Gilis, with 260 households on Gili Meno in particular struggling to get fresh water for about six months.
On 3 September 2026 the water supply on Gili Trawangan stopped, and the state broadcaster RRI reported, citing the hotel association, that at least 300 travellers left the island earlier than planned. The local water utility attributed the cause to a fault in the desalination plant (Bali Live). Hotels drained their pools to cover basic hygiene and brought water over by boat from the mainland.
Koran Jakarta reported on 11 September that supply had resumed and island life was gradually returning to normal, while the provincial governor said a permanent solution was still to be put in place. We could not confirm the situation after that, so ask your accommodation about water as your trip approaches.
For electricity, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources announced that in 2012 the three islands were connected to mainland Lombok by an undersea cable, replacing the diesel generators each island had relied on. We could not find any official information on how often power cuts happen today.
For these reasons, it pays to ask the following before booking. Is the shower fresh water, and is there hot water? Is there a storage tank for water cuts, or a generator for power cuts? Is the room air-conditioned or fan-only? How many minutes is it from the jetty? Does music from nearby bars reach the room at night?

Examples of places whose existence and location we confirmed on official sites
Below are places to stay, island by island, whose existence and location we could confirm on their official websites. They are not ranked recommendations; they are examples to help you picture the price levels and types of accommodation. We only give prices where the official site showed them.
Gili Trawangan: Pondok Santi Estate sits on about 7 hectares of former coconut plantation at the quiet southern end of the island, with 28 units in all: 20 villas, 5 bungalows and 3 rooms. Some villas have private pools. The official site did not show prices. At the budget end, the Mad Monkey hostel is on the beach and has dorms and private rooms. Prices are as in the table above, and guests must be 18 or over.
Gili Air: Slow Gili Air has 10 villas, all with private pools, in one-bedroom and two-bedroom layouts. Prices are as in the table above. The official site did not say how far it is from the harbour or which side of the island it is on.
Gili Meno: Mahamaya says on its official site that it is located at the island’s “Turtle Point”, with beachfront villas among its rooms.
Also on Gili Meno, BASK Gili Meno has units from 32 m² studios to 218 m² three-bedroom residences and takes guests to the door on its own speedboat. Seri Resort Gili Meno is an adults-only beachfront property with 32 standard rooms, 17 beach bungalows and pool villas. None of the three showed prices on their official sites. We have not listed budget places on Meno because we could not find any whose location and prices were confirmed on an official site.
How many nights? Work backwards from boat times and your flight home
According to BASK Gili Meno’s official site, boats from several operators run from Amed, Padang Bai, Sanur, Serangan, Nusa Lembongan and Benoa in Bali to the Gilis, and most leave in the morning. It also says the last boat to the Gilis leaves Padang Bai at 2 pm. Both your arrival and departure days revolve around boat times, so with only one night you have almost no unhurried time on the island. Two nights give you one full day with no boat to catch.
If you stay on two of the three islands, moving day means packing up and hauling your bags back to the jetty, so two nights or more on each is a comfortable plan. If you would rather not move your luggage at all, you can stay on one island and visit the others as day trips.
Avoid leaving the island on the day of your international flight home; get back to mainland Lombok or Bali by the day before. In the rainy season (November to March), weather can change boat schedules, so leave extra slack at the end of your trip.
For sample itineraries for one, two and three nights and how long each activity takes, see How many nights on the Gili Islands?
A note from Sekotong
Rather than deciding on a Gili room from the facility list on a booking site alone, message the place directly and ask three things: is the shower fresh water, what do you do during water or power cuts, and how many minutes is it on foot from the jetty? How specific the answers are tells you a lot about how well the place is prepared for water and power problems. On arrival day, pack so that you can carry your own bags from the jetty to your room. If you take a cidomo, agree on the destination and the fare before you get on.
Who the three Gilis may not suit, and another option
Staying on the three Gilis has its downsides. The fresh-water supply failed both in 2024 and in September 2026. With no cars, getting around is harder for people with a lot of luggage or who find long walks difficult, and music plays late into the night in central Trawangan. The boats to the islands are affected by the weather. If reliable water and easy transport matter most to you, a hotel on Bali or mainland Lombok will suit you better.
On the other hand, if you want a stay on an island with no traffic noise, where you walk to the sea and spend the evening on the beach, the three Gilis give you good reasons to go.
If you are looking for seas with even fewer people than the three Gilis, there are also small islands called the “South Gilis” off Sekotong in southwest Lombok. There are far fewer places to stay than on the three Gilis, and some islands have none at all. You usually reach them by arranging a boat from a harbour on the Sekotong side, and they are not as convenient as the three Gilis. We compare the two in Gili 3 vs South Gili: which should you stay at?, and describe each island in The South Gilis off Sekotong.
Frequently asked questions
Q. What is the cheapest way to stay in the Gili Islands?
A shared dorm is the cheapest. A Trawangan hostel’s official site listed beds from US$16.50 a night (checked October 2026). For a private room, the Ministry of Tourism’s official site gives examples of bungalows at Rp200,000 to 500,000 a night (about US$11 to 28). Cheap rooms may be fan-only or have no hot water, so check the facilities before booking.
Q. Do hotel showers in the Gilis use fresh water?
It depends on the place. A 2016 research paper found that groundwater on Trawangan is brackish and that about 90 percent of fresh water came from a treatment company. That supply stopped in 2024 and again in September 2026. Ask before booking whether the shower is fresh water and what backup there is for water cuts.
Q. Can I walk from the harbour to my accommodation?
Gili Eco Trust says most places to stay on Trawangan are less than a 20-minute walk from the harbour area. With a lot of luggage, in rain or arriving at night, a cidomo or the accommodation’s transfer is easier. Ask before booking which jetty you will arrive at and how many minutes it is to your room.
Q. Which island is best for a quiet stay?
Gili Meno is the quietest of the three. If you stay on Trawangan, choosing a place away from the central bar area cuts down the noise at night. Asking the accommodation whether music from nearby bars reaches the rooms at night makes the choice easier.
Q. How many nights should I stay?
Boats from Bali mostly leave in the morning, so your arrival and departure days follow the boat schedule. Two nights or more gives you a day without a boat. If you stay on two islands, two nights or more on each is a comfortable plan. Avoid leaving the island on the day of your international flight home.
Summary
Choose your Gili accommodation by the island’s character first (lively Trawangan, in-between Air, quiet Meno), then by the distance from the harbour. Prices vary widely: dorm beds on Trawangan from US$16.50, budget bungalows at Rp200,000 to 500,000 a night, and mid-range to upscale hotels reported at Rp660,000 to 5,220,000 a night.
Before booking, check with the accommodation about fresh-water showers, backup for water and power cuts, cooling, distance from the jetty and noise at night. Staying two nights or more, and not leaving the island on the day of your international flight, gives your schedule some breathing room. Prices and boat times change, so check the latest information before you travel.
