This article compares the two on five points, prices, crowds, nightlife, the sea and getting there, without exaggeration. We are Semelar Beach Village, based in Sekotong, and we try to be straightforward about it.

First, the difference in scale

Phuket is Thailand’s largest island and one of Southeast Asia’s leading beach resorts, developed over decades. Hotels, restaurants and tour companies of every size are concentrated in several areas, starting with Patong. Each area has its own character, from busy nightlife districts to calmer stretches, so you can choose a base to suit your purpose. Its airport is Thailand’s third busiest, handling about 17.5 million passengers in 2025.

Money changers, convenience stores and chain cafes are everywhere, so first-time visitors find it easy to get around. Decades of welcoming travellers have built up that depth of infrastructure.

Lombok is an Indonesian island just east of Bali. Sekotong, where we are based, is a fishing village area in the southwest of the island, where tourism has only just begun. It is not a strip of big resorts but a place where village life carries on as it always has. There are almost no convenience stores or chains, and options for changing money and shopping are limited. This difference in scale and maturity is at the root of every other difference below.

Five points at a glance

Here are prices, crowds, nightlife, the sea and getting there side by side. Each is explained in more detail below, so start with whichever matters most to you.

Which is cheaper? Meals and accommodation

Comparing daily costs on the ground, Sekotong on Lombok tends to be easier to keep cheap overall. Our Lombok travel costs guide puts a rough daily cost at about Rp165,000–385,000 (about US$9–22) for a backpacker and about Rp660,000–1,430,000 (about US$37–80) for mid-range travel, excluding flights. A standard dish at a local warung costs around Rp22,000–33,000 (about US$1.25–1.85), and a dorm bed or simple guesthouse starts around Rp110,000 (about US$6.20) a night.

Phuket is generally described as expensive by Thai standards. A 2026 cost guide by Travel Guides Tips calls it Thailand’s most expensive area for tourists, with hotels 20 to 40% dearer than comparable places in Bangkok, Chiang Mai or other islands. A street food dish costs 50–80 baht (US$1.50–2.40), and a three-course meal for two at a mid-range restaurant 800–1,500 baht (US$24–45). A hostel dorm bed is 270–400 baht (US$8–12) in the May to October low season and 400–600 baht (US$12–18) in the November to April high season; a mid-range hotel US$45–90 in low season and US$70–140 in high season; and a five-star resort US$150–350 in low season and US$250–600 or more in high season. Travelling cheaply is possible, but if low cost is the main goal, Sekotong is easier on the budget once you are there.

Take care

  • Flights are a separate matter: Lombok has few international routes, so getting there can cost more and take longer. Budget on the basis that it is cheap once you are there, not necessarily to get there
  • Prices move with the season: exchange rates and high and low seasons change prices, so check when you book

Crowds: Patong in high season and quiet Sekotong

Phuket is famous worldwide, and in the high season from November to April many visitors gather in the main areas, starting with Patong. The bustle of the beaches and nightlife streets is part of Phuket’s appeal, but it does not suit people who are looking for somewhere to get away from crowds.

Sekotong, by contrast, still has few visitors. Even in Lombok’s dry season, the best time to visit, the beaches are not crowded. To be honest, that is partly because there are fewer sights, and there is not the range of developed tourist facilities that Phuket has.

Many travellers who love Bali tell us they have started to mind its crowds and rising prices. Phuket, popular for decades, also feels busy on beaches and nightlife streets in high season. If what you want is to avoid crowds, Sekotong, still developing, is quieter for now.

Nightlife: Bangla Road and Sekotong’s nights

Patong in Phuket has one of Southeast Asia’s best-known nightlife areas, with bars, clubs and night markets centred on Bangla Road. For travellers who want lively evenings, this is a big draw.

Sekotong has nothing comparable. After dark, nights are mostly quiet: dinner and time under the stars. At Semelar Beach, SAKURA CAFE and SEMELAR MARKET are open from 10:00 to 22:00 (closed on Mondays). This is the atmosphere of our stay programme itself, but if a lively night out is your reason for choosing a destination, we will say plainly that Sekotong will feel too quiet.

On the other hand, if you have ever felt that a precious holiday ended up being spent in crowds even at night, Sekotong’s quiet is the very thing it offers. Nightlife is not good or bad; it reflects what you want from the trip.

The sea: a full beach resort and simple snorkelling

Phuket’s sea comes with plenty of options, from parasailing and jet skis to diving tours. For a first beach holiday where you want everything on hand, that is a real strength.

Around Sekotong, as our snorkelling and diving guide describes, the sea is simple and unspoilt. You can snorkel around the South Gili islands offshore, but there is not Phuket’s range of choices or highly developed facilities. Boats and guides are more often arranged individually through a local base rather than through large tour companies.

In return, the sea off Sekotong is rarely crowded with tour boats, and you can snorkel in quiet surroundings. Choose Phuket for facilities and range, Sekotong for a quiet sea with few people.

Getting there

Figure: Getting to Phuket and to Lombok

Phuket Thailand’s third busiest airport: 17.5 million passengers in 2025, 10.8 million of them international Direct flights from Asia, the Middle East and Europe, some seasonal Lombok International direct flights only from Kuala Lumpur and Singapore Most travellers connect via Bali or Jakarta Sekotong is about 1 hour 10 minutes by car from the airport

Phuket International Airport has direct flights from across Asia and from further afield, including the Middle East (for example Emirates from Dubai and Etihad from Abu Dhabi) and Europe (for example Air France from Paris and Condor from Frankfurt, plus seasonal flights from London, Zurich and Scandinavia). With many routes, it is relatively easy to fit flights to your dates.

Lombok has no long-haul direct flights: international direct routes are limited to Kuala Lumpur (AirAsia, Batik Air, Lion Air) and Singapore (Scoot). Most international travellers connect via Bali or Jakarta, and many spend a night or two in Bali on the way, which can be part of the trip rather than just a constraint. Sekotong is about 1 hour 10 minutes by car from Lombok International Airport. For flights and routes in detail, see Lombok flights and Bali to Lombok.

A note from Sekotong

People who switch from Phuket to Sekotong sometimes say the amount of tourist information is so different that they were unsure at first. Sekotong has no nightlife district and no night market. Our stay programme runs from 3 nights/4 days to 5 nights/6 days at Rp4,800,000 per person, with airport transfers, transport, a guide, a welcome dinner and a massage included; flights and accommodation are separate. We hope you will see Sekotong not as a place with nothing, but as a place with a way of spending time that is not yet widely known.

Frequently asked questions

Q. Which is better for a first solo trip abroad, Lombok or Phuket?

Phuket has mature tourist infrastructure and English is widely used, so it has more reassurance for travellers who are new to travelling abroad. Sekotong on Lombok is quieter and less developed; you can ask us questions in English, but services across the area are more limited. It depends on how much support you want.

Q. Does Sekotong have nightlife?

Honestly, there is nothing like Patong’s Bangla Road. After dark it is mostly quiet: dinner and stars. If you want a lively night out it will feel too quiet; if you want calm nights, that contrast is the appeal.

Q. Which is cheaper?

As a general guide, daily costs on the ground are easier to keep low in Sekotong. But getting to Lombok is not necessarily cheap, so include flights when you compare the total.

Q. Are there direct flights to both?

Phuket has direct flights from across Asia, the Middle East and Europe. Lombok’s only international direct flights are from Kuala Lumpur and Singapore, and most travellers connect via Bali or Jakarta. Schedules change, so check when you book.

Phuket or Sekotong: which should you choose?

As we have seen, Phuket and Sekotong on Lombok cannot be ranked; they are completely different kinds of destination. Phuket has mature infrastructure and plenty of hotels, restaurants and nightlife. For anyone who wants reassurance and buzz on a trip abroad, it is a strong choice, and its long record of welcoming travellers from around the world is not something we would dismiss lightly.

On the other hand, if you are a little tired of “touristy” tourist spots, or want time closer to local people, an area still developing like Sekotong may give you more. Getting there is not cheap and takes longer, which is an honest weakness, but staying longer and slower on the ground can make the whole trip better value.

Phuket suits people who want developed infrastructure, a wide choice of hotels and restaurants and lively nights. Sekotong on Lombok suits people who want to avoid crowds, spend time close to local people and make the most of low prices on a slow stay. If Bali’s crowds have started to wear on you, it is worth knowing about as another option.
