Gili Islands Solo Travel: Which Island, Night Safety and Dorms

“Will I feel out of place on the Gili Islands on my own?” “Which of the three islands should I stay on if I am travelling solo?” “What should I watch out for at night and in the sea when nobody is with me?” These are the questions that come up when you plan a solo trip to the Gilis.

In short, the Gili Islands are an easy place to travel solo. There are no cars or motorbikes, the islands are small, and there are plenty of other travellers, so eating or walking around alone does not stand out. As a rule of thumb, choose Gili Trawangan if you want to meet people, Gili Air if you want something in between, and Gili Meno if you want quiet time on your own. At the same time, drinks at night, the sea between the islands and boats after dark all need extra care when you are alone.

This article is based on pages we opened and read: the travel advice of the UK and Australian governments, Indonesia’s official tourism site, Lonely Planet and local news reports. It covers only what we could confirm as of October 2026. Room and activity prices come from operators’ official websites, Indonesia’s official tourism site and Lonely Planet, checked in October 2026. It is written for people heading to the Gilis on their own, especially those staying on a small island alone for the first time.

What this article covers

  • ✓Why the Gilis suit solo travellers, and where they fall short
  • ✓Which of Trawangan, Air and Meno to choose as a solo base
  • ✓Typical prices for dorms and private rooms, and what to ask before you book
  • ✓Things you can easily join alone (shared snorkelling trips, yoga and more)
  • ✓Drinks at night, the sea and boats, and who to contact if something goes wrong

In short

The Gili Islands are an easy place to travel solo. Trawangan to meet people, Air for something in between, Meno for quiet. Dorm beds start from about US$16.50 in one example. Keep your drink in sight at night, never swim between the islands, and do not take boats after dark. Follow those three rules and a solo trip here is very manageable (October 2026).

Are the Gili Islands good for solo travel?

Yes, for three reasons. First, the islands are small and easy to get around. According to Indonesia’s official tourism site, cars and motorbikes are banned on all three Gilis, and people get around by bicycle and cidomo (horse cart). You simply do not get into fare arguments with taxi touts.

Second, there are a lot of travellers. In an August 2023 Tempo report, the harbour authority on Gili Trawangan estimated that 3,000 to 5,000 foreign travellers arrive on the island every day. Eating alone at a warung or waiting for the sunset on your own on the beach is nothing unusual.

Third, there are many shared trips and classes you can join alone. Snorkelling trips, dive courses and yoga classes all let you spend the day with other people once you sign up.

There are downsides too. Lonely Planet (updated July 2026) says the Gilis are generally safe and easy to navigate, but warns about dengue fever and tap water. On Trawangan, with its many bars, drinks carry their own risks. Prepare on the assumption that nobody will be there to help straight away if you fall ill or run into trouble.

Which of the three islands should a solo traveller stay on?

For a solo trip, the choice comes down to one question: do you want to meet people, or spend quiet time on your own?

Gili Trawangan is the largest of the three and has the most places to stay. Indonesia’s official tourism site says party nights rotate between the bars, which usually stay open until about 4 am. Most accommodation and facilities are on the east side of the island. It suits people who want to meet other travellers and spend evenings out. On the other hand, depending on where you stay, music can reach your room late at night. Our Gili Trawangan guide covers the island in more detail.

Gili Air is the closest to mainland Lombok and the most populated of the three. The official tourism site suggests Gili Meno or Gili Air for a quiet getaway, and Lonely Planet places Air between Trawangan and Meno. It works well for solo travellers who want a little of both activity and quiet.

Gili Meno is the smallest, with only a few hundred permanent residents (official tourism site). It is the quietest of the three, and both the tourism site and Lonely Planet describe it as popular with honeymooners. It suits a trip of reading, swimming and early nights, but there are fewer chances to meet other travellers. There are few places to eat, and you cannot rely on finding a working ATM. The difference between Air and Meno is covered in Gili Air or Gili Meno: which suits you.

Figure: Choosing a Gili island for a solo trip

1 Gili Trawangan Island Largest. Most places to stay and eat Night Bar parties until about 4 am Suits People who want to meet others Note Night noise reaches some rooms Keep your drink in sight 2 Gili Air Island Closest to Lombok, most populated Night Quieter than Trawangan Suits People who want a bit of both Note Paths are dark. Carry a light Avoid inland shortcuts at night 3 Gili Meno Island Smallest and quietest Night Few places open; quiet early Suits People who want quiet time alone Note Fewer chances to meet people Bring cash; do not rely on ATMs
Figure based on Indonesia’s official tourism site and Lonely Planet (updated July 2026), checked October 2026. Night noise and darkness also depend on where on the island you stay.

If you cannot decide, you can split your stay: spend the first nights on Trawangan to find your feet, then move to Air or Meno for quieter days. Public boats run between the islands in the morning and the afternoon.

How much does accommodation cost when you travel alone?

Accommodation is where solo travel costs the most, because you pay for the whole room yourself instead of splitting it. In one example we checked, a hostel on Gili Trawangan listed dorm beds from US$16.50 a night on its official website (checked in October 2026; guests aged 18 and over only). For a private room, Indonesia’s official tourism site lists bungalows at Rp200,000 to Rp500,000 a night.

Dorms are cheap and make it easy to meet other guests, but you have to look after your own belongings and sleep. Private rooms cost more, but you can rest behind a locked door. You can mix the two, for example taking a private room for the first night and moving to a dorm once you know your way around.

Before booking a place to stay alone, it helps to ask the property directly about the following.

  • ✓Is there staff at night, and can you check in if you arrive late?
  • ✓Does the room lock, and is there a lockable locker in the dorm?
  • ✓How many minutes is it on foot from the pier where you land, and is the way lit?
  • ✓Does music from nearby bars reach the room at night?
  • ✓Is the shower fresh water, and is there a backup for water or power cuts?

The fresh water supply on the Gilis stopped in 2024 and again in September 2026. When you are alone, the people you turn to are the staff where you stay. A place that answers quickly and clearly is likely to be easier to rely on once you are there.

What to ask about water and power before you book, how luggage gets from the harbour to your room, and the price ranges on each island are in our guide to Gili Islands hotels.

What can you easily join on your own?

Quite a lot. The most useful options for solo travellers are shared activities where you spend the time with other participants once you sign up.

Shared snorkelling trips: Indonesia’s official tourism site lists shared trips around the three islands at Rp100,000 to Rp150,000 per person for three to four hours. An operator on Gili Trawangan (website updated July 2026) ran morning, afternoon and late-afternoon trips from Rp150,000 per person. There are other people on the boat, which is safer than going far out alone.

Diving: on courses and try dives you go into the water with an instructor and other participants.

Yoga: the official website of Gili Yoga on Gili Trawangan showed drop-in classes with no booking needed, at Rp200,000 per class (checked October 2026). A morning class gives you a place to see other faces at the start of the day.

Cycling and sunsets: bike rental costs Rp50,000 to Rp100,000 a day, and cycling around Gili Trawangan takes about an hour. For the sunset, head to the west side. Lonely Planet says petty theft is not that common, but advises locking your bike anyway.

If you want dinner after watching the sunset, our guide to Gili Islands restaurants and cafes covers the west side of Trawangan, the night market and typical budgets on each island.

What should you watch out for when going out alone at night?

Drinks come first. The UK government’s travel advice (as of October 2026) says there have been reports of drink spiking linked to sexual assault in Bali, Lombok and the Gili Islands, and asks travellers to watch their drinks being prepared and not to leave them unattended. The same page says reported cases of rape and sexual assault are high in Bali and Lombok.

Methanol in poorly made alcohol is another risk. The Australian government’s advice says as little as one shot of methanol can be fatal and recommends drinking only branded, sealed drinks. The UK advice adds that methanol poisoning has come from drinks bought in licensed bars, shops and hotels in tourist areas.

You may see signs offering drinks with magic mushrooms. They are not legal in Indonesia, so do not buy or drink them.

Paths also get dark. As our guide to solo and women’s travel on Lombok explains, shops on the east-side street of Gili Trawangan stay open at night, but inland paths have little lighting. The UK advice also says to avoid poorly lit areas at night.

Figure: Four checks before going out alone at night

1 Decide how you will get back Avoid dark inland shortcuts 2 A light and small cash Island paths have few street lights 3 Watch your drink being made Or choose sealed; never leave it alone 4 Note where you are staying On paper as well as your phone If something goes wrong Police 110 Ambulance 119 Your embassy or consulate Save the number before you go

What about the sea and boats when you are alone?

Do not swim between the islands. They look close, but the water between them has strong currents. In December 2022, a traveller went missing while trying to swim from Gili Trawangan to Gili Meno, and the search was called off after seven days without finding them. Heavy rain, strong wind, strong currents and high waves were named as obstacles (JPNN, 24 December 2022).

The Australian government’s advice also says Australians have drowned in rough seas and strong rip currents at popular beaches, including on Lombok and the Gili Islands. If you snorkel alone, stay at a busy beach, choose a time when the current is weak and stay close to shore. If you want to go further out, joining a shared trip is safer.

Take boats in daylight. The Australian advice says not to travel by water after dark or in bad weather, and to use another provider if there are not enough life jackets. Public boats from Bangsal harbour on mainland Lombok to the Gilis run during the day and finish around 17:00 (tiket.com, updated June 2026). There are basically no scheduled boats after sunset. It is safest not to plan an itinerary that gets you to the island late.

Take care

  • Do not swim between islands: the currents are strong even though the islands look close, and a traveller who tried it in 2022 was never found.
  • Boats in daylight only: there are basically no scheduled boats after sunset, and the Australian government advises against travelling by water after dark.
  • Do not drink tap water: Lonely Planet says tap water is not safe to drink anywhere in Indonesia. Drink purified or sealed water.
  • Bring insect repellent: Lonely Planet says dengue fever is the biggest risk from mosquito bites on the Gilis and recommends repellent, especially around dusk.

Clothing, money and what to do if something goes wrong

Clothing: according to Lonely Planet, most residents of the Gilis are Muslim, and you may see signs saying “No swimwear in the village”. Keep swimwear for the beach and cover up when walking inland or through residential areas. During Ramadan some businesses close earlier and parties are limited.

Money: Gili Trawangan has ATMs around the harbour (tiket.com), but on Gili Meno you cannot rely on finding one. When you are alone, there is nobody to cover for you if your card does not work, so split your cash between two places and keep a spare card separately.

If something goes wrong: if you feel unwell, ask the staff where you are staying for help first and put medical care first. Police is 110 and ambulance is 119. Save the number of your country’s embassy or consulate before you travel. The larger hospitals are in Mataram on mainland Lombok, and getting there from the islands means a boat. Take out travel insurance and keep your contacts on paper too.

A note from Sekotong

When travelling solo, keep your exchanges with your accommodation in writing, on WhatsApp or similar. It makes changing your arrival time or asking for a pick-up easier. Before crossing to the islands, tell your accommodation on the mainland or your family which island and which place you are staying at, and until when. If a boat is cancelled and your plans change, nobody has to panic.

The drawbacks of solo travel on the Gilis, and who it suits

The drawbacks first. Because you pay for the room alone, accommodation costs more than for two people sharing. Nights on Trawangan come with drink risks, and Meno’s quiet means fewer chances to meet anyone. The larger hospitals are on the mainland, and boats do not run at night. If your trip is built around nightlife, or being close to medical care matters most, you may need to rethink the plan.

On the other hand, it suits people who enjoy getting around a small island by bike and on foot, spending the day with others on shared trips or at yoga, and heading back early in the evening.

As an alternative to the three northern Gilis, there are also quiet small islands off Sekotong in southwest Lombok, known as the South Gilis. The differences are covered in Gili 3 vs South Gili and the South Gilis off Sekotong. We are Semelar Beach Village. In a fishing village in Sekotong, we run a beach cafe (SAKURA CAFE, 10:00 to 22:00, closed Mondays), a market and a beach club together with local Sasak people. The village is about 1 hour 10 minutes by car from Lombok International Airport and about 40 minutes from Lembar Port. Our 13 private villas are under construction, and the first is due to be completed in early 2027 (plan as of August 2026). What you can book now is a stay programme of 3 nights to 5 nights (Rp4,800,000 per person, about US$270, including airport transfers, transport during the stay, a guide, a welcome dinner and a massage; flights and accommodation are not included).

Frequently asked questions

Q. Can women travel to the Gili Islands alone?

Yes. But the UK government reports drink spiking linked to sexual assault in Bali, Lombok and the Gili Islands. Keep your drink in sight, avoid dark paths at night, and decide how you will get back before you go out. Clothing and where to draw the line at night are covered in more detail in our guide to solo and women’s travel on Lombok.

Q. Which island is easiest for making friends?

Gili Trawangan, which has the most places to stay and eat, plus bars and parties. Staying somewhere with dorms, or joining shared snorkelling trips or dive courses, gives you time with other travellers.

Q. How much is accommodation for one person?

In the examples we could confirm, dorm beds at a Trawangan hostel started from US$16.50 a night (October 2026, official website), and private bungalows ran Rp200,000 to Rp500,000 a night (official tourism site). Prices change with the season and room, so check the booking page.

Q. Is it safe to snorkel alone?

Stay at a busy beach and close to shore. The Australian government says people have drowned in strong rip currents at beaches including on the Gilis. Join a shared trip if you want to go further out, and never swim between the islands.

Q. How many nights should I stay?

If you come by fast boat from Bali, two nights is a reasonable minimum. If you split your stay between two islands, two nights on each means you will not be rushed on the day you move.

Summary

With no cars or motorbikes, plenty of travellers and shared trips and yoga you can join alone, the Gili Islands are an easy place to travel solo. Choose Trawangan to meet people, Air for something in between and Meno for quiet. Dorm beds start from about US$16.50 in one example, and private rooms cost more because you pay for the room on your own (October 2026).

The rules worth keeping when you are alone: keep your drink in sight and choose sealed drinks, do not swim between the islands, and do not take boats after dark. Keep emergency contacts (police 110, ambulance 119, your embassy or consulate) on paper as well, and keep your exchanges with your accommodation in writing.
