The short answer
Gili Trawangan suits people who want to enjoy diving, snorkeling and nightlife. There are two ways to get there: a direct fast boat from Bali, or via the main island of Lombok (Bangsal Harbour). If you want quiet, the trick is to avoid the main street on the east side and choose a place to stay in the north, the west or the middle of the island.
What kind of island is Gili Trawangan?
Gili Trawangan is the largest of the three islands, yet you can still walk all the way around it in about an hour. Up to the 1990s it was a quiet island with just a handful of simple guesthouses and no electricity, but once its beautiful coral reefs became known among Western backpackers, places to stay and restaurants multiplied rapidly. Today hotels, villas, dive shops, bars and restaurants are packed mainly along the east side of the island, making it the liveliest of the three.
On a hill on the south side of the island are the remains of a gun emplacement said to have been used by the Japanese military during the Second World War. It has a view over the Lombok Strait, hinting that the waters here were a strategic lookout point at the time. It is sometimes presented locally as a historic site, but we recommend checking the latest situation before you visit.
No cars or motorbikes run on the island, a feature shared by all three Gili Islands. The bicycles and cidomo (horse carts) used to get around are also part of the infrastructure that carries goods on the island.
In a video published in December 2025 on our team’s YouTube channel, Hiroki Nakamura, who runs a business in Sekotong, said that as of November 2025 a cidomo ride cost about Rp50,000 per person (Rp100,000 for two people, Rp150,000 for three; Rp50,000 is about US$2.80) (video). He also said that if you show them a photo of your hotel, they will take you there (video). Prices and how drivers guide you can change with the season and the driver, so please treat this only as a guide as of November 2025.
How to get there from Bali and Lombok
There are broadly two ways to get to Gili Trawangan: “a fast boat direct from Bali” and “a route through the main island of Lombok.”
On the Bali side, fast boats leave from several harbors, including Padang Bai, Serangan and Amed, and many services run straight to Gili Trawangan’s harbor. From the main island of Lombok, the northern Bangsal Harbour is the traditional gateway. From Bangsal you can use both the shared public boats, which leave once enough passengers have gathered, and fast boats that run at set times. Getting from Lombok Airport (Praya) to Bangsal Harbour requires travel by road, so if you are flying in, it helps to think about how you will get from the airport as well. For basic information about Lombok as a whole and its climate, see also Complete Guide to Lombok: getting there, weather and highlights.

Arrive at Lombok Airport (Praya)
This is the starting point if you are flying into Lombok.
Travel by road to Bangsal Harbour in the north
The traditional gateway to the Gili Islands. From the airport you need to travel by road.
Take a boat to Gili Trawangan
There are shared public boats (they leave once enough passengers have gathered) and fast boats that run at set times.
* From Bali, many direct fast boats also run from Padang Bai, Serangan, Amed and elsewhere (as of August 2026).
Boat fares, travel times, operators and the number of services vary a great deal by season, and with public boats in particular, which leave as soon as they are full, the waiting time is hard to predict. We recommend checking the latest information on a booking site or at the local ticket counter. Also, when heading to Gili Trawangan from the Sekotong area, direct scheduled services are not the norm, and you basically travel via the main island of Lombok. For specific routes and travel times from Sekotong, the safest way is to check individually, for example with a local transfer service.
Features of each area and how to spend your time
Gili Trawangan is a small island, but the atmosphere differs quite a lot from area to area. Use this as a reference when choosing where to stay.
← The table scrolls sideways
| Area | Location | Atmosphere | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| East side (the main street around the harbor) | The island’s east coast, around the boat landing | Restaurants, bars and dive shops are concentrated here, and there are people about all day long | People who want a lively stay, and people who value convenience for getting around |
| South side | Near the southern tip of the island | Known as a spot with a view of the sunset, with a relatively calm atmosphere | People who want to enjoy the evening view, and people looking for a romantic atmosphere |
| North and west sides | Areas you reach by bicycle from the harbor | Less developed, with quiet beaches and small places to stay dotted about | People who want to get away from the bustle, and people who want to take it easy |
| The middle of the island | Inland, a few minutes to about 10 minutes from the harbor on foot or by bicycle | Villas and other places to stay are scattered about, with easy access to whichever beach you like | People who want a balance between quiet and convenience |

The east side, where the harbor is, has no shortage of shops and places to eat, but it is also the area where the foot traffic and the music are most likely to bother you. The north and west sides, on the other hand, take a little bicycle ride to reach, but that is what lets you relax on quiet beaches. If you rent a bicycle and ride around the island during your stay, you will feel for yourself the contrast between the bustle of the east and the calm of the north-west. The names and price ranges of places to stay in each area vary a great deal by property and by season, so we recommend checking individually.
Diving and snorkeling
Behind Gili Trawangan’s growth as a tourist destination are the clarity of the surrounding sea and the richness of its coral reefs. Several PADI-certified dive shops are gathered on the east side of the island, covering everything from introductory dives for beginners to license courses and fun diving. The current number of dive shops and the going rates change with the season and the shop, so we recommend comparing options in advance.
For snorkeling, one of the attractions of this area is that there are several spots where you can encounter sea turtles. Boat tours that go around the spots are common, but there are also places on the east and north sides where you can walk straight into the sea from the beach and observe. Current encounter rates and the condition of specific spots change with the season and sea conditions, so the safest thing is to check with a local shop.
On the other hand, it has also been pointed out that sediment runoff from development is damaging the coral reefs. In these waters, local groups including the “Gili Eco Trust” continue to protect and restore the reefs, and as a traveler, following basic manners such as using the designated mooring buoys and not touching the coral helps protect the sea.
Nightlife and things to watch
Gili Trawangan is known as the island with the richest nightlife of the three. Along the main street on the east side, bars and restaurants stay open late, and some liven up with music playing. For friends and groups traveling together, and for travelers who want to be sociable, it is an attractive setting.
In a video published in December 2025 on our team’s YouTube channel, Hiroki Nakamura introduced a bamboo bar called “Cloud 9” on the Sunset Beach side, saying that you can see the sunset well from the upper floor, and that in the direction of the sunset you can also see Mount Agung on Bali (as of November 2025, video).
On the other hand, this liveliness can be a drawback for travelers who want quiet. The closer your accommodation is to the main street on the east side, the more likely you are to hear music and voices at night. If you want to stay quietly, it is a good idea to choose a place to stay in the north or west, or in the middle of the island, or to check the location in advance. Details of the current rules on opening hours, drinking and noise may be applied differently from time to time, so we recommend checking the latest information.

Here are the other things to watch, told honestly, not just the good points.
Note
- The inconvenience of having no cars or motorbikes: Getting around the island is limited to walking, rental bicycles and cidomo (horse carts). If you have a lot of luggage, or are moving in bad weather or at night, you may find it inconvenient. The background to this system is explained in detail in What Are the Gili Islands? The Three Islands Compared and How to Get There.
- Waste disposal problems: It is a small island, so waste-handling capacity is limited. It has been reported that the waste system could not keep up with the growth in tourists, leaving litter noticeable on the beaches. Local groups continue with beach cleanups and recycling, but the impression of the current waste system may differ depending on when you visit. As a traveler too, it matters to take your rubbish with you and cut down on single-use plastic.
- The risk of cancelled boats: Depending on sea conditions, boats can be cancelled or delayed. If you visit in the rainy season or another time when the sea is likely to be rough, it is reassuring to leave some slack in your schedule. For an idea of when cancellations are more likely, please check the latest information from locals and operators.
- High prices: Because supplies have to be brought in by boat, food and accommodation tend to be pricier than on the main island of Lombok. Gili Trawangan in particular, being the most developed, tends to have a higher price range than the other two islands, which is worth keeping in mind.
🏝️ A word from us in Sekotong
Sekotong, where we are based, is an area that has kept simple beaches and island time, not yet developed, and feels a little different from the three northern Gilis. We also recommend combining a few quiet days with your time in the bustle of Trawangan, either before or after.

Summary: after the lively island time, quiet Sekotong is there too
Gili Trawangan is an island that easily becomes an option for travelers who want to enjoy diving, snorkeling and nightlife. At the same time, it is an island that also has its downsides: the inconvenience of getting around without cars or motorbikes, noise, waste-handling problems and high prices. Picturing a realistic way of spending your time, not just the good points, leads to a more satisfying trip.
If you feel “I’d like to experience the lively island time but also have some quiet time,” there is also the option of building a stay in Sekotong, in the southwest of Lombok, into part of your itinerary. We at Semelar Beach Village are based in the Sekotong area, where simple, undeveloped beaches and island time remain, a little different from the three northern Gilis. We would be glad if you would consider a stay in Sekotong, whether as a way to round things off after enjoying the bustle of Gili Trawangan, or as a place to spend the first few days of your trip quietly.
