The site says these figures are long-term averages based on data from the Climatic Research Unit (CRU) at the University of East Anglia, the UK Met Office and the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute. It does not name a weather station, so they are not necessarily the values on Kuta’s beach. The start and end of the rains vary from year to year.

How warm is the sea, and how strong is the sun?

In the same averages, the sea at Kuta is warmest at 29°C from December to February and coolest at 26°C from July to September. In the middle of the dry season the sea is about 3°C cooler than in the rainy season, so a thin long-sleeved rash guard helps if you spend a long time in the water.

The UV index is 9 in June and 10 (very high) in July, and 11 or more (extreme) in every other month. UV does not drop in the rainy season, so you need a hat and sunscreen all year. Plan to spend the middle of the day in the shade.

Where do the rainy and dry seasons divide?

In Kuta’s averages, rainy days drop to 7 in May and 5 in June, and to 1 to 3 from July to September. Rainfall rises to 120 mm in October, but on only about 3 days. In November rainy days reach 11, and the rainy season begins. This broadly matches this site’s basic division (rainy season November to March, dry season April to October).

April has 12 rainy days and is the month when the rains give way to the dry season. If you visit Kuta in the rainy months, keep two possible beach days in your plan. How to enjoy the rainy season is covered in Lombok in the Rainy Season.

How to plan by season

Grouping Kuta’s averages by season: from December to February it rains on more than half the days of the month, with 7 to 8 hours of sunshine a day. March to May is when rainy days fall, to about 7 in May. June to September has 1 to 5 rainy days a month, making beach and sea plans easy, but the sea is cooler at 26 to 27°C. October is the end of the dry season, and the rains begin in November.

Even in the rainy season, it does not rain all day every day. The sunshine averages are still 7 hours a day in January and February, the wettest months, so there is time on the beach between showers.

What is the weather like in MotoGP week?

According to the 2027 calendar reported by crash.net (25 September 2026), the MotoGP Indonesian race at Mandalika is on Sunday 31 October, and the date is provisional. In Kuta’s averages October has 120 mm of rain on about 3 days and a high of 32°C, the end of the dry season. It is a hot, sunny time, so take plenty of water and shade on race day.

Rain has affected a rainy-season race before. According to The Race (20 March 2022), heavy rain delayed the start of the March 2022 race by more than an hour, and it was shortened from 27 laps to 20. The 2026 race was held on 9 to 11 October. The circuit is covered in Mandalika Circuit Guide.

Take care

  • The 2027 MotoGP date is provisional (as of September 2026)
  • Hotels around Mandalika fill up and prices rise around race weekend
  • October is the hottest month of the year (32°C average high)

How does Kuta compare with Mataram?

weather2travel also gives averages for Mataram, the island’s capital on the west side. Side by side, January rainfall is 299 mm in Kuta and 317 mm in Mataram, October 120 mm and 95 mm, and December 260 mm and 219 mm. The number of rainy days is almost the same in every month. The sea from July to September is shown as 26°C at Kuta and 27°C at Mataram, one degree cooler at Kuta.

Both are long-term averages from the same site. The differences are a few tens of millimetres and can be smaller than the variation between years, so there is no need to choose where to stay on weather alone.

Is Sekotong’s weather the same as Kuta’s?

Sekotong is a peninsula in the south-west of Lombok, a different place from Kuta. weather2travel has no figures for Sekotong, and the averages for the two towns in this article may not apply there directly. The island-wide split between rainy and dry seasons is the same: more rain from November to March and less from April to October.

Sekotong’s month-by-month weather and the best time for South Gili island hopping are in Sekotong Weather by Month, and driving times between Kuta and Sekotong are in Lombok Travel Times. From Lombok International Airport it is about 25 to 30 minutes by car to Kuta and about 1 hour 10 minutes to Sekotong.

A note from Sekotong

Use the averages to choose your dates, then use the weather forecast from one to two weeks before you travel to decide your days on the sea. In the rainy season, do not squeeze island and sea plans into one day; keep a spare day.

Downsides, and who each season suits

First, the downsides. From November to March Kuta has 11 to 21 rainy days a month, so beach days are often rained on. The dry season has little rain, but UV is extreme in most months and the sea drops to 26°C. The averages are not station readings, and the start of the rains varies by year. Hotels fill up in MotoGP week.

If you want to avoid rain, June to September suits you; if you want dry-season weather without the busiest weeks, mid-October before MotoGP does. The Semelar Beach Village stay programme runs from 3 nights and 4 days to 5 nights and 6 days and costs Rp4,800,000 (about US$270) per person, including airport transfers, transport during the stay, a guide, a welcome dinner and a massage (flights and accommodation are separate). For a trip combining the south coast and Sekotong, see Stay.
