When can you climb Mount Rinjani?

Mount Rinjani’s trails close every year from January to the end of March for safety in the rainy season and to let the ecosystem recover, and usually reopen on 1 April (Antara, June 2025). In 2026 they reopened on 1 April. We could not find the 2027 reopening notice at the time of writing.

April is the tail of the rainy season and still has rainy days, and trail conditions vary from year to year. If you plan to climb, check the national park’s announcements and your trekking operator before booking. How to climb is covered in the Mount Rinjani trekking guide.

Take care

  • Check the 2027 reopening date in the national park’s announcement
  • April on the mountain can still be wet, and trail conditions change easily
  • Domestic travel is busy over the 15 to 20 May long weekend, so travel days either side are easier

Late April and early May: few Indonesian holidays

In 2027 Indonesia has no public holidays in April, Labour Day on 1 May falls on a Saturday and Ascension on 6 May is a Thursday, so the big domestic break comes in mid-May. The period from late April to early May, which is a holiday season in some countries, is therefore not a peak for Indonesian domestic travel in 2027.

If your dates are flexible, compare flights on dates either side of your own country’s holidays as well.

How long should you stay between April and June?

Lombok’s only direct international flights are from Kuala Lumpur and Singapore, so most travellers connect through Bali, Jakarta or one of those cities. Sekotong is about 1 hour 10 minutes by car from Lombok International Airport. On the way home, for an international flight you should reach the airport four hours before departure, so leave Sekotong about 5 hours 10 minutes before departure (30 minutes to an hour earlier in rain or traffic).

Arrival day and departure day are mostly travel, so the days you can spend on the sea are the number of nights minus one or two. To separate island-trip days from beach days and swap them on windy days, three nights or more works well. How many nights to stay is covered in how many nights in Sekotong.

How to spend April to June in Sekotong

With less rain, it becomes easier to plan island trips and snorkelling days off Sekotong. Wind direction and strength vary from day to day, so head out on island trips in the morning and come back after midday, and spend windy days on the beach or in the village.

Semelar Beach Village plans to start paddle and pedal kayak hire (seven boats) on 7 November 2026. Prices are Rp120,000 an hour for a two- to three-person paddle kayak, Rp175,000 for a one-person pedal kayak, and Rp300,000 per person for a guided tour. The beach cafe SAKURA CAFE and SEMELAR MARKET are open 10:00 to 22:00 (closed Mondays), and the bamboo restaurant is scheduled to open on 7 November 2026 with planned hours of 10:00 to 22:00, closed Mondays.

Figure: A day in Sekotong, April to June

1 Morning: island trip or snorkelling Take the boat out while the wind is light 2 Midday: rest at the beach cafe or your room Stay in the shade in the strongest sun 3 Late afternoon: kayaking or a beach walk Watch the sunset from the beach On windy days Move the island trip to another day and stay on the beach and in the village

A note from Sekotong

April still has about 12 rainy days, and rainy days decrease towards June (Mataram averages). Putting the island trip early in your stay, so it can move if the weather turns, makes it easier to fit everything in even with a rainy or windy day.

Downsides, and who an April to June trip suits

The downsides first. April is the end of the rainy season, with about 12 rainy days in the month. The mid-May Indonesian long weekend makes domestic travel busy. The Rinjani reopening date has to be checked each year.

With less rain and longer sunshine, this season suits people who want plenty of days on the sea and those who want to go before the peak dry months of July and August. Semelar Beach Village’s stay programme runs from 3 nights and 4 days to 5 nights and 6 days at Rp4,800,000 per person, including airport transfers, transport, a guide, a welcome dinner and a massage (flights and accommodation are separate).
