Bali Prices in 2026: What Food, Transport, Stays and Massages Cost, and Is Bali Still Cheap?

Information as of November 2026

“How much do things cost in Bali now?” “Is it true Bali is not cheap any more?” If you have seen posts saying Bali is not as cheap as it used to be, you may be unsure before you even book. Looking into it, the answer is neither simply “cheap” nor “expensive”: what you pay depends heavily on the area and how you spend your time. This article sets out the price ranges for food, transport, accommodation and massage found in 2026 travel cost guides, and how to think about a trip budget. We run Semelar Beach Village in Sekotong on Lombok, and often hear from travellers looking beyond Bali, so we also look at prices for comparison.

What this article covers

  • ✓Prices in Bali in 2026 for food, transport, accommodation and massage
  • ✓Why people say Bali is no longer cheap, and what has actually gone up
  • ✓The Bali tourist levy and how to pay it
  • ✓Practical ways to keep closer to local prices

In short

Bali’s prices have split into tiers. Local warungs and backstreet massage places are still cheap, while cafes and resorts in popular areas can cost as much as in many Western cities. Where you stay and how you spend your days decide what Bali costs you.

Bali’s prices have split into three tiers

It is hard to sum up Bali’s prices in a word. From the sources we checked, they fall into three broad tiers. The first is the warungs (local eateries) and shops that local people use, which are still clearly cheap. The second is cafes and mid-range restaurants, priced up for visitors but still reasonable. The third is high-end resorts and fashionable cafes and restaurants in popular tourist areas, where prices are close to, or higher than, those in many big cities elsewhere.

So “Bali is cheap” and “Bali is expensive now” are both partly true and partly misleading. Depending on the area you stay in and whether you choose local or tourist places, the total cost of the same trip can differ several times over.

Price ranges: food, transport, accommodation and massage

This table puts local prices and tourist-area prices side by side, from two travel cost guides updated in 2026. Prices vary with the exchange rate and from place to place, so treat them as ranges. US dollar figures are as given by the sources.

As the table shows, “a one-hour massage” can mean very different prices at a street spa and at a resort spa. Neither is the right choice; many travellers use local spas several times and book one resort spa treatment at the end of the trip. Food works the same way: if you have breakfast and a light lunch at warungs and pick a nicer restaurant only in the evening, your daily food spending drops a lot.

Even among tourist areas, internationally known places such as Seminyak, Canggu and Uluwatu cost more than others. Bali Holiday Secrets estimates these hotspots cost roughly 40% more than quieter areas for the same quality, and that staying in Canggu, Seminyak or Uluwatu can add 20 to 30% to food and accommodation costs. Choosing your base a little differently changes what you spend on meals and activities.

How to think about your trip budget

Your total cost is flights plus what you spend each day on the ground. Flights depend entirely on where you fly from and when, so we do not give totals here. The key point is that flights are a fixed cost: the shorter the trip, the more each day carries of the airfare. Put the other way, the longer you stay, the more you benefit from low local prices.

Figure: How a Bali trip budget adds up

1 Flights A fixed cost that depends on where you fly from and when 2 Daily costs on the ground Food, stay, transport and activities, by the tier you choose 3 Tourist levy Rp150,000 per person, once per trip Longer stays spread the airfare More nights, lower cost per day

New in recent years: the tourist levy

One charge to know about is the levy Bali province collects from foreign tourists. According to the official Love Bali site, it is Rp150,000 per person, paid once per trip, and it must be paid before you leave Indonesia. Paying online through Love Bali before you travel is strongly encouraged because it speeds up arrival. You can also pay at counters at Bali’s airport and port, or at registered points such as hotels, travel agents and attractions. Payment is cashless: credit cards, bank transfer, virtual account, UnionPay or QRIS. After paying you receive a levy voucher with a QR code by email, so keep it on your phone.

The levy is small compared with the cost of a trip. Still, it is a reminder that Bali’s prices and rules change from year to year, and we plan to review this section each year.

Take care

  • The levy is required: it must be paid before you leave Indonesia; paying online before you go is the easiest way
  • Rules and prices change: the levy and prices may be revised from year to year, so check the latest information just before you leave

Why Bali’s prices have risen in recent years

The sources point to a few common reasons. One is the recovery in tourism: visitor numbers have come back since the pandemic, and in popular areas demand easily outstrips supply. Another is that social media has concentrated visitors and investment in particular areas such as Seminyak, Canggu and Uluwatu, pushing up land prices, rents and wages; the more stylish cafes and coworking spaces an area has, the more its general price level rises. A third is currency and import costs: upscale places that use imported ingredients and materials pass rises on more readily. Bali Holiday Secrets also notes that prices in hotspots such as Canggu and Uluwatu have crept up.

Warungs and markets that serve local people are less affected. “Bali has got expensive” may be more accurately “Bali’s popular areas have got expensive”. Many of the “it was cheaper ten years ago” comments refer to cafes, beach clubs and villas in famous areas, not a rise across the whole island.

This also means first-time visitors, who tend to stay in the famous areas, are more likely to come away thinking Bali is expensive, while repeat visitors who know quieter areas and local places often feel differently.

Five ways to keep costs down

  • ✓Step off the main street: warungs and shops a little away from the main roads tend to have calmer prices
  • ✓Use ride-hailing apps: apps show the fare in advance, which makes budgeting easier than taxis from touts
  • ✓Make local spas your regular and book a resort spa once: everyday massages at local places, a resort spa for a special day
  • ✓Plan your money exchange: the basics of exchanging and paying in rupiah are the same across Indonesia; see our money and payments guide
  • ✓Stay longer to spread the airfare: the shorter the trip, the bigger the share of flights, so more nights usually means better value

A cheaper island next door

Bali’s local tier is still cheap, but its tourist areas have gone up. If you have been to Bali before and want somewhere with fewer crowds and less worry about prices, consider Lombok next door. Our Lombok travel costs guide puts a rough daily cost at about Rp165,000–385,000 (about US$9–22) for a backpacker and about Rp660,000–1,430,000 (about US$37–80) for mid-range travel, excluding flights. Tourist areas on Lombok are priced close to Bali, but local areas are cheaper.

Lombok has fewer international flights: direct international routes are limited to Kuala Lumpur and Singapore, so most international travellers connect via Bali or Jakarta. From Bali you can reach Lombok by plane or boat, so adding Lombok to a Bali trip is a realistic option. Which island suits you is covered in Bali or Lombok, and the routes from Bali in Bali to Lombok. The longer you stay, the more the lower prices on the ground count.

A note from Sekotong

In Sekotong, in the southwest of Lombok, our stay programme runs from 3 nights/4 days to 5 nights/6 days at Rp4,800,000 per person, including airport transfers, transport during the stay, a guide, a welcome dinner and a massage; flights and accommodation are separate. Lombok has limits on convenience too, so we try to describe both the good points and the inconvenient ones honestly.

Frequently asked questions

Q. Is Bali still a cheap destination?

It depends on the area and how you spend your time. Based around local warungs and street spas, it still feels cheap; centred on cafes and resorts in popular areas, spending can be close to that in many Western cities.

Q. How much cheaper than home is Bali?

There is no single ratio. Local meals and street spas are far cheaper than in most Western countries, while restaurants and resorts in tourist areas are approaching big-city prices. Which tier you spend in makes the difference.

Q. When and how much is the tourist levy?

Rp150,000 per foreign tourist, paid once before you leave Indonesia. Paying online through the official Love Bali site before you arrive is the easiest way.

Q. Is there somewhere cheaper than Bali?

Next-door Lombok has many areas less developed for tourism than Bali, and local prices are still modest. It has fewer international flights, so the longer you stay, the better the value.

Summary

Bali’s prices are neither “cheap” nor “too expensive now”: in 2026 they have split into a local tier, a middle tier and a tourist tier. Choose warungs and street spas and Bali is still good value; centre your trip on upscale places in popular areas and you may spend about as much as at home. Decide which tier you will mainly use and budgeting becomes much easier.

If Bali’s tourist prices are wearing you out, add Lombok and Sekotong to your comparison. At Semelar Beach Village we run a stay programme close to village life, and we will keep giving honest information about a different sense of prices and pace from Bali’s.
