Lombok Nightlife: Bars, Beach Clubs and Night Markets by Area

“Is there any nightlife on Lombok?” “Where are the bars and beach clubs?” “Is it safe to go out at night?” Many people wonder how to spend their evenings before they travel to Lombok. The short answer: the liveliest nights are on Gili Trawangan, one of the three Gili Islands, where cafes and bars are said to take turns hosting a party every night. On the main island, Kuta (Mandalika) and Senggigi have bars, beach clubs and places with live music, and in Mataram you can eat out at night and visit night markets alongside local people. Nights in Sekotong are quiet and centre on the sunset and the stars. On the other hand, you need to watch out for drink spiking, bootleg alcohol and offers of illegal drugs.

This article is based on travel safety information from the governments of Australia, the United States and the United Kingdom, with that of Japan (the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Consulate-General in Denpasar) as a further example, announcements by ITDC, the state-owned company developing the tourism zone, Indonesian news reports, and videos our team filmed on Lombok. We only name venues whose operation we could confirm on an official site or a listings site. Where we could not confirm something from public sources, such as the number of bars or their opening hours, we say so.

It is written for people who want to enjoy Lombok at night too, who are deciding which area to stay in, or who are concerned about safety after dark.

  • ✓How nights differ in Gili Trawangan, Kuta, Senggigi, Mataram and Sekotong
  • ✓Bars, beach clubs, night markets and eating out at night
  • ✓Alcohol on a mostly Muslim island, and nights during Ramadan
  • ✓What to watch for: drinks, illegal drugs, getting home and the sea at night

In short

If nightlife is the point of your trip, Gili Trawangan is the place to stay. In Kuta and Senggigi it is more a matter of a drink at a bar or beach club, and in Mataram and Sekotong the evenings are about food, the sunset and the stars. Drink at venues that cater to tourists and never leave your glass unattended. Indonesia hands down heavy sentences for drug offences, including the death penalty, to foreigners too, and on Gili Trawangan people have repeatedly been arrested for selling juice laced with magic mushrooms. Say no even if someone offers.

Is there nightlife on Lombok? How the areas differ

Yes, but only in a few places. Gili Trawangan is the most developed of the three Gilis and has a great many foreign visitors, Hiroki Nakamura, who runs our business in Sekotong, says in a video on our team’s YouTube channel (December 2025, in Japanese).

On the main island, Kuta (Mandalika), about 40 minutes south of the airport (our own guide puts it at about 25–30 minutes by car), has a lively town area, and national development has brought a motorbike racing circuit and upmarket resorts, Nakamura explains in a video from September 2025. The island’s largest town is the provincial capital Mataram, and Senggigi to its north has long been a well-known resort area, he says in the same video. Sekotong is not a tourist hub: many resort guests there spend their time relaxing inside the resort, and it is some distance to town, he adds.

Putting together what we confirmed for this article, the character of each area at night looks like this.

Figure: Lombok at night, area by area

The character of each area at night (from the reports and videos cited in this article; we found no data comparing crowd sizes) Gili Trawangan Liveliest of the three Gilis • Cafes and bars take turns hosting a party every night • The art market is the heart of dinner; sunset on the west side • No cars or motorbikes; walk, cycle or take a horse cart home Kuta (Mandalika) About 25–30 min from the airport • A town area and a beach club with a pool • New Year and food festivals in the seafront park and mall • No public data found on bar numbers or opening hours Senggigi A long-standing resort • Some places play live music late into the night • Hotel guests have complained about noise (reported Sept 2026) • In 2023 it was also reported to have grown quiet Mataram The island’s largest town • Places where you can eat local food at night • A night market with funfair rides has been held (2018) • Food stalls from late afternoon to night in Ramadan (2026) Sekotong Seaside in the southwest • Little light at night, so the stars are easy to see • Sunset from the beach; cool at night; few places to go out • On festival nights, food stalls and fairground rides may gather

How do you spend an evening on Gili Trawangan? Sunset, bars and the night market

You can watch the sunset on the west side of the island in the early evening and then head out for dinner or a drink. In a video published in December 2025, Nakamura and his group have the last dinner of their tour at Cloud 9, on the sunset beach side of the island. It is a bamboo building with a good view of the sunset from the upper floor, he says, and Bali’s Mount Agung can be seen in the direction of the sunset, he points out. On the listings site Tripadvisor it appears as “Cloud 9 Beach Lounge”, with reviews posted as recently as August 2026. Opening hours can change, so check before you go.

Indonesia Kaya, a site introducing Indonesian culture, says that on Gili Trawangan cafes and bars traditionally take turns hosting a party every night, and that the art market is the centre of dinner. In 2015 the Indonesian travel media detikTravel described the beachside night market lined with fresh fish, prawns and squid. The island is a very lively place, Nakamura says in the same video.

No motorised vehicles are allowed on the island, so you get around on foot, by bicycle or by cidomo, a horse cart. In the video, a cidomo from the harbour to the hotel is negotiated at Rp50,000 per person (about US$2.80, on a tour in November 2025; US$1 = about Rp17,800, September 2026). How to get to the island and where to stay are covered in our complete guide to Gili Trawangan.

What are nights like in Kuta (Mandalika) and Senggigi? Beach clubs and live music

In Kuta, ITDC, the state-owned company developing the Mandalika area, presents “Mandalika Beach Club” on its official site as a beach club with a pool, drinks and food. Its Tripadvisor listing has reviews as recently as June 2026. According to ITDC, Kuta Beach Park on the seafront is a park with a 1.4 km promenade, and the street between it and the Bazaar Mandalika shopping area has a stage for music and dance performances.

There are also evening events. According to ITDC, a street food festival was held at Bazaar Mandalika from 25 to 28 December 2024, with bands, DJs and a fire show, and drew 7,152 visitors over four days. Indonesian media reported that 17,518 people gathered for the New Year’s Eve event at Kuta Beach Park at the end of 2024, with fireworks. On the other hand, we found no public data on the number of bars in Kuta or their opening hours.

Senggigi is an area that has long been developed as a resort, Nakamura says in the December 2025 video. In February 2023 the local media Inside Lombok reported that Senggigi’s entertainment venues had lost customers as other options such as Kuta grew. In September 2026 it reported that Senggigi’s hotel association complained that guests were disturbed by live music running from late at night until morning, and asked that cafes and restaurants close by 11 p.m. and nightclubs, with soundproofing, by 2 a.m. If you want a quiet night’s sleep, it is worth checking before you book whether any venue near your hotel plays music.

How to spend the evening like local people: night markets, food stalls and Ramadan nights

If you do not drink, evenings are about food and night markets. In 2022 the Indonesian news site Liputan6 listed dishes you can eat at night around Mataram, such as sate bulayak served with rice cakes wrapped in palm leaves, and tahu tek (tofu and vegetables) in the old town of Ampenan. In 2018 the local paper Radar Lombok reported that a night market with funfair rides was held in Mataram from 7 to 11 p.m., with an entry fee of Rp5,000.

In Sekotong, too, people gather on festival nights. On Lombok, whenever there is an event, fairground rides and food stalls naturally gather and start doing business, Nakamura says in a video published in May 2026, and in the middle of the road at the venue, rides like a travelling funfair had appeared. It was a Saturday night, and children were playing until late. Around here there are resort hotels but few places where local people go out, and the nights are cool, he says.

During Ramadan, the fasting month, the evenings are among the liveliest of the year. During Ramadan there is a custom of eating out together at night, and in the second half eating out increases and restaurants in town get busy, Nakamura explains in a video published in March 2026. In Sekotong, the meal to break the fast began everywhere at around 18:30 (mid-March 2026). According to the state news agency ANTARA, during Ramadan 2026 a food stall village open from 4 to 10 p.m. was set up at Teras Udayana in Mataram.

Where can you drink alcohol? On a mostly Muslim island

Most Indonesians are Muslim, and many do not eat pork or drink alcohol. In West Nusa Tenggara, the province that includes Lombok, about 97 percent of residents were Muslim in 2024 data from Indonesia’s Ministry of Religious Affairs (see religion on Lombok). Lombok is also a mostly Muslim island, and you can drink mainly at bars, restaurants and hotels that cater to tourists. Convenience stores do not sell alcohol, and village eateries rarely have it. Where to buy it, prices and how things work during Ramadan are covered in our guide to alcohol and beer on Lombok.

During Ramadan the rules for nightlife change. Australia’s Smartraveller notes that during Ramadan, eating, drinking and smoking may be illegal in public, and Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as one example, says opening hours of nightspots and similar venues are restricted especially during the fasting month. North Lombok Regency, where the Gili Islands are, was reported to have issued a circular for Ramadan 2026 banning loud music and parties at hotels and karaoke venues and allowing only quiet music during meals. In West Lombok Regency, home to Senggigi, karaoke venues, cafes and billiard halls were asked during Ramadan 2025 to open only from 10 p.m. to midnight, and some were reported not to comply. If you plan to go out during Ramadan, ask your hotel what local venues are doing.

What should you watch out for at night? Drinks, drugs and getting home

First, drinks. The Australian government’s travel advice (Smartraveller) says drink spiking can happen anywhere in Indonesia and asks travellers not to leave drinks or food unattended. It also says methanol, produced in poorly made alcohol, can be fatal even in a single drink, and recommends drinking only sealed drinks from known brands. In 2013 the Australian public broadcaster ABC reported that a 19-year-old traveller who had been drinking at a bar on Gili Trawangan on New Year’s Eve died of methanol poisoning. The UK government says there have been deaths and cases of serious illness in Indonesia from alcoholic drinks containing methanol, that criminal gangs make counterfeit replicas of well-known brands, and that methanol cannot be identified by taste or smell. It also reports drink spiking linked to sexual assault in Bali, Lombok and the Gili Islands. Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as one example, also warns against buying or drinking unofficial alcohol.

Next, drugs. The US State Department says drug use, possession and trafficking can result in heavy fines, long jail sentences and the death penalty in Indonesia, and Australia’s Smartraveller says you may face heavy fines or jail for consuming or possessing even small amounts, including marijuana. As one example of local warnings, the safety guide of the Consulate-General of Japan in Denpasar (whose area includes West Nusa Tenggara, the province Lombok is in) warns that people in Bali’s nightlife districts and nightclubs smoothly sell illegal drugs, and that what they call “legal” is often in fact illegal.

On Gili Trawangan, arrests over magic mushrooms keep happening. According to Inside Lombok, in February 2024 two people were caught selling mushrooms mixed into pineapple juice at cafes and bars, with a menu graded by strength. In September that year, detikTravel reported that the owner of a shop on the island was arrested for selling mushrooms mixed into fruit-flavoured juice to foreign tourists. In September 2026 ANTARA reported that a site in North Lombok Regency growing mushrooms for sale to several night venues on the island had been raided, and noted that the psilocybin they contain is a Class 1 narcotic. Smartraveller also says magic mushrooms are illegal and seriously harmful to health. Even in a juice or a shake, say no if you are told it contains mushrooms.

Getting home also needs care. Australia’s Smartraveller says theft, robbery and bag and phone snatching have occurred in Indonesia, and the UK government warns of bag-snatching and pickpocketing, particularly in busy tourist areas. Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as one example, advises against going out late at night and moving about alone, and says snatch thefts by pairs on motorbikes are increasing. Check that your driving licence is valid in Indonesia before you ride (see how to drive a motorbike or car on Lombok). Smartraveller says Australians have been killed and injured in motorbike accidents on Lombok and the Gili Islands, and that people have drowned in rough seas and rip currents at beaches in the same area. Do not go into the sea at night after drinking.

Figure: What to watch out for at night on Lombok

1 Drinks Keep them in sight • Do not leave your glass and walk away • Choose sealed drinks from known brands • No bootleg alcohol. Methanol can kill even in a single drink 2 Drugs Say no, even if offered • Juice with mushrooms has also led to arrests as a narcotics case • Do not believe it if told it is “legal” • Heavy sentences, incl. death, for foreigners 3 Getting home No walking alone late at night • Watch out for snatch thefts by motorbike • Check your driving licence is valid • Motorbike accidents have killed and injured • Ask your hotel for a car or horse cart 4 The sea at night Do not swim after drinking • On beaches on the Gilis and Lombok too, people have drowned in rip currents Nights during Ramadan (the fasting month) • Japan’s foreign ministry: nightspot hours are restricted during the fasting month • North Lombok Regency (2026): circular banning loud music and parties at hotels and karaoke venues • West Lombok Regency (2025): karaoke venues, cafes and others asked to open only from 10 p.m. to midnight

For a quiet night: sunsets and stars in Sekotong

In Sekotong, the lack of nightlife is exactly what makes the stars so good. The area around Sekotong is still rural, with little light at night, Nakamura says in a video published in January 2026, and unlike in town, the stars are fairly easy to see here, he explains. When and where to see the Southern Cross and the Milky Way is covered in detail in our stargazing guide to Sekotong, Lombok.

The time before sunset is worth watching too. From Semelar Beach, where the beachside SAKURA CAFE is, you can see Mount Agung faintly on the horizon in good weather, and in the evening Mount Agung and the sunset, Nakamura says in a video published in May 2026. Watch the sunset, have an early dinner, and look at the stars from where you are staying: that is how evenings go in Sekotong.

A note from Sekotong

Village shops in Sekotong hardly ever sell alcohol. If you want a drink at your accommodation, buy it when you pass through Mataram or Senggigi, or ask in advance whether your hotel serves it. The roads are dark at night, so when you go out for dinner, ask your hotel for a car and agree on a time to come back. If you want to enjoy a night on Gili Trawangan, stay on the island rather than visiting for the day, so you travel less after dark.

Who is a nightlife trip to Lombok for? The downsides first

To be honest, mainland Lombok is hard to recommend if you want to party in a big club until morning. Most of the nightlife is on Gili Trawangan; Kuta and Senggigi on the main island have a limited number of venues, and Senggigi has been reported to be losing customers. During Ramadan, some areas restrict music and parties. In Sekotong there is almost nowhere to go out at night.

Depending on how you spend the night, there are also risks. Drink spiking and bootleg alcohol can kill, and on Gili Trawangan illegal mushroom juice was sold to travellers. The roads are dark at night, and motorbike accidents and snatch thefts happen. Plan to stay near your accommodation at night and to be able to call a car to get around.

It suits you if you enjoy dinner with a sunset view and a drink or two at a bar, want to look around local night markets and food stalls, or want quiet nights under the stars. Splitting your trip between lively nights on Gili Trawangan and quiet nights in Sekotong lets you have both.
