Best Hotels and Villas in Lombok | How to Choose by Area

Information as of August 2026

Lombok has several areas whose accommodation trends differ greatly: Senggigi, Kuta Lombok (Mandalika), the Gili Islands and Sekotong. The short version: if you value ease of getting around and plenty of places to eat, Senggigi or Gili Trawangan suits you; if you want to enjoy surfing and the atmosphere of an area under development, Kuta Lombok; and if you want a quiet sea and time close to everyday life, Sekotong. This article is not an experience review of one particular hotel. Semelar Beach Village, based in Sekotong on Lombok, sets out the trends in accommodation, the price ranges and the type of traveller each area suits.

The short answer

If you value convenience and nightlife and dining, Senggigi or Gili Trawangan; if you want to enjoy surfing and the energy of a developing area, Kuta Lombok; if you want a quiet sea and time close to village life, Sekotong. We recommend working backwards from “what do you want to do” to choose the area.

Lombok has four main areas to stay | Comparison table

Lombok is a large island, roughly 80 km both north to south and east to west, and both the number and the type of facilities differ greatly from area to area. The four representative areas are Senggigi, a long-established resort area in the centre-west of the island; Kuta Lombok (Mandalika) in the south; the Gili Islands off the north-west; and Sekotong in the south-west. For where these sit on the island and what to see, please also read Lombok: The Complete Guide to Getting There, Climate and Highlights.

Senggigi | The established area with the most facilities

Senggigi is the area on Lombok where tourism development began earliest. It is close to the provincial capital Mataram, and is said to rank near the top on the island for the number of facilities and the range of choice. Along the coastal road, budget-class homestays, mid-range hotels with pools and some high-end resorts stand side by side, and restaurants, beach bars and massage shops are gathered here too, so it is an easy area to stay in if you do not want to worry about meals or shopping.

As a guide to prices, budget-class stays are said to run about Rp150,000–300,000 (about US$8–17), mid-range about Rp400,000–900,000 (about US$22–51), and some high-end resorts to exceed Rp1,500,000 (about US$84). It is close to the boat landings for the Gili Islands, so it is also often chosen as a base for touring around Lombok.

Kuta Lombok (Mandalika) | A surf area under development

Kuta Lombok, in the south of the island, has long been familiar to surfers looking for good waves. Around it spreads a government-led tourism development area called “Mandalika”, and large resorts of international chains are said to be arriving one after another. As a result, accommodation is split into two types: guesthouses and surf camps for surfers, as there have always been, and newly built high-end resorts.

Beautiful beaches such as Tanjung Aan and Selong Belanak are dotted around, and you can enjoy a different face at each beach. However, many plots in the development area are still under construction, so it suits people who enjoy the atmosphere of a “town in the middle of change” more than quiet. Guesthouse-class stays are said to run about Rp150,000–400,000 (about US$8–22), and newly opened high-end resorts can be Rp2,000,000 (about US$112) or more.

Gili Islands | Resorts and guesthouses on car-free islands

Gili Trawangan, Gili Air and Gili Meno, three islands off the north-west of Lombok, are a well-known place to stay. No cars or motorbikes run on the islands; getting around is mainly on foot, by horse cart (cidomo) or by bicycle. Because all supplies are brought in by boat, accommodation is said to tend to cost a little more than on the main island.

Of the three islands, Gili Trawangan has the most facilities and the liveliest atmosphere, with everything from dormitories for backpackers to luxury villas. Gili Air keeps some of its fishing-village feel and is easy to stay in, so it is often chosen by families. The smallest, Gili Meno, has few facilities and suits couples who want a quiet time. For the differences between the three islands and how to get there, see also Lombok: The Complete Guide to Getting There, Climate and Highlights.

Sekotong | A quiet area with still few places to stay

Sekotong, in the south-west of Lombok, does not yet have the name recognition of Gili Trawangan, and it has far fewer places to stay than Senggigi or the Gili Islands. Large hotel chains have hardly arrived, and small boutique resorts and lodge-style stays are the main type. For the features and highlights of the whole area, please see Sekotong Complete Guide: A Hidden Corner of South-West Lombok.

As one of the accommodation options, we at Semelar Beach Village also run a stay programme built together with the people of Sekotong village. It is not a place where you “only sleep”, as in a hotel: it is a stay style in which you spend a few days to a few weeks with fishing-village life, snorkelling and farming experiences, and it suits those looking not for “Lombok as a tourist destination” but “Lombok close to everyday life”. If you want an ordinary hotel or villa stay, it is worth understanding beforehand that this is an area where the choice itself is still limited.

So which is best? Choosing by travel style

Figure: Choosing an area by purpose

1 Senggigi For those who value convenience and choice 2 Kuta Lombok (Mandalika) For surfing and the buzz of a developing area 3 Gili Islands For sea activities and a resort feel 4 Sekotong For quiet stays close to village life

If it is your first visit to Lombok and you want ease of getting around and a choice of places to eat and enjoy the evening, Senggigi, where the accommodation is concentrated, is a safe choice. If surfing is the purpose and you also want to enjoy the energy of a town being developed, Kuta Lombok suits you. If you value the clarity of the sea and diving and snorkelling, the Gili Islands; if you want liveliness, Gili Trawangan; and for a quiet trip for two, Gili Meno tends to be chosen. If you want to avoid the crowds and spend a few days to a few weeks in a flow of time close to village life, Sekotong is also an option.

Please note

  • Prices are only a guide: The price ranges in this article are reference values based on general travel information. Actual rates vary with the season, the exchange rate and the booking site, so please check each property’s official information before booking.
  • Book early in the high season: The dry season (about April to October) and Christmas and New Year are said to fill up quickly.
  • Watch for cancelled boats to the Gili Islands: In the rainy season (about November to March), boats are sometimes cancelled depending on sea conditions. Avoid crossing between islands on the day you connect to a flight home, and leave some slack before and after.
  • Sekotong has few facilities: If you book at the last minute, you may not get the type you want. If you are considering a long stay, we recommend contacting the accommodation or stay programme early.

🏝️ A word from Sekotong

If you come to Sekotong expecting a hotel town like Senggigi or the Gili Islands, you may feel there are “few places to stay”. But being that much quieter, and being close to the people of the village, is the character of this area. Alongside the search for an ordinary hotel or villa, we also introduce a stay programme in which you take part in village life. (As of August 2026)

Frequently asked questions

Q. Which area of Lombok has the most choice of hotels and villas?

At present, accommodation is said to be concentrated in Senggigi and Gili Trawangan. If you are a first-time visitor or value convenience, it is worth comparing these two areas first.

Q. Senggigi or Kuta Lombok: which is better for a first visit?

If you value access from the airport and the provincial capital and a good number of places to eat, Senggigi; if you want to enjoy surfing and the atmosphere of a developing area, Kuta Lombok. Choosing after you have made your purpose clear makes it harder to go wrong.

Q. Are there hotels or villas in Sekotong?

Large hotel chains are few, but there are small boutique resorts and lodge-style stays. In addition, like us at Semelar Beach Village, there is also a stay programme in which you take part in village life.

Q. Is accommodation on the Gili Islands more expensive than on the main island?

Because supplies are brought in by boat, it is said to tend to be a little higher than the main island even at a similar grade. If you want to keep your budget down, try comparing areas on the main island as well.
