This article is a child article of “Recommended hotels and villas in Lombok” and focuses on the major resorts whose names you already know or have heard. General area explanations are left to that parent article. Here we stick to property-level decision material, such as “What is the difference between Novotel and Oberoi?” and “How do the three Senggigi resorts differ?”
Quick comparison | 5 major resorts
Conclusion
When choosing a famous Lombok resort, you are less likely to go wrong if you decide by “which area is it in?” before the name. Even among “famous resorts,” how you spend your time is completely different in Senggigi, Kuta/Mandalika and Tanjung. All US$ figures in this article are approximate conversions at US$1 ≈ Rp17,800 (September 2026). Actual rates move daily.

* The price range is a guide based on the cheapest room type shown on Booking.com and Agoda on 7 August 2026, for 2 guests in 1 room without breakfast, and is not an official announcement by each property. Within what we checked this time, none of the 5 properties publishes a rate table on its official website. Actual prices may be higher than these. US$ figures are approximate conversions at US$1 ≈ Rp17,800 (September 2026). Because they vary greatly by season, room type and exchange rate, be sure to check the official website or official booking desk. Travel times from the airport also vary with road conditions and starting point. The “Atmosphere / guests” column is a guide based on how each property’s official site presents itself.

How the character of each area differs
When comparing Lombok resorts, the first thing to pin down, before the property name, is “which area is it in?” Even among “Lombok resorts,” how you spend your time differs completely by area.
Figure: Areas of the major resorts and travel time from the airport
* Travel times are guides based on each property’s official site (as of August 2026). The island shape is a simplified sketch to show relative positions, not an accurate map.
Senggigi | The long-established resort area, with many restaurants within walking distance
Senggigi is an area on the island’s west coast that was developed for tourism early on. Along the coastal main road (Jalan Raya Senggigi), several hotels, restaurants, spas and souvenir shops, including Sheraton, Holiday Resort and Katamaran, are clustered over several kilometres. This “clustering” is the big difference from other areas: even while staying at one resort, it is easy to walk or take a taxi to another hotel’s restaurant or a beach bar. It is also known as a sunset spot with a view of Mount Agung on the Bali side, and Katamaran Resort promotes its Mount Agung view on its official site too.
POINT
The biggest feature of Senggigi is that many hotels, restaurants and spas are clustered along the main road. Even while staying at one resort, it is easy to walk or take a taxi to another hotel’s restaurant or a beach bar, and this is the biggest difference from the other three areas.
Kuta Lombok / Mandalika | The south of the island, for surfing and MotoGP
Kuta Lombok, in the south of the island, is an area dotted with world-famous surf spots, and in recent years large-scale development has been progressing there under the name “Mandalika.” The Mandalika Circuit, host of the international “MotoGP Indonesian GP,” is also in this area (on the official MotoGP calendar it is scheduled for 9–11 October 2026), and Novotel is right next to it. It is close to the airport, and the easy access is an attraction. On the other hand, it does not have as dense a cluster of restaurants and nightlife as Senggigi, and it is also an area still under development. Being close to the circuit is also something to consider, including the possibility of noise during race periods. For more on the area, see also the “Kuta Lombok (Mandalika) guide.”
Note
Novotel is adjacent to the Mandalika Circuit. Around race and event periods such as the MotoGP Indonesian GP (scheduled for 9–11 October 2026), the noise may bother you. If your dates are close, it is reassuring to check the event calendar.
Tanjung in the northwest | Quiet high-end. Oberoi’s one-resort area
Tanjung is an area in the northwest of the island, across from the Gili Islands. There is almost no commercial cluster like in Senggigi or Kuta; the character is a contrasting quiet, with only a few luxury resorts on vast grounds like the Oberoi. It is the farthest from the airport, and you could think of the journey itself as “time to switch into another world,” but the flip side is that it is also an area with few options for going out of the resort to do something.
Sekotong | Almost unknown and quiet. The area where we are based
Sekotong, at the southwest tip of the island, unlike the three areas introduced so far, has seen almost no tourism development by large resorts. For now there are no large properties whose names come up in hotel-name searches, and quiet beaches and local life are right next door. The features of the whole area are introduced in the “Sekotong complete guide,” and we touch on it again later in this article.
Guides to the major resorts
From here we look one by one at the five resorts most often searched by name.
Novotel Lombok Resort & Villas
An Accor group resort on the beach in Kuta Lombok, in the Mandalika district (Pantai Putri Nyale). According to the official site, there are 102 rooms and villas in total. The range is wide: hotel-wing rooms such as Superior King/Twin and Deluxe Terrace (31–45 m²), Sasak-style private villas, Garden Pool Villas, and villas with a private pool (1–2 bedrooms, 142–242 m²). It has a spa, fitness centre, three outdoor pools, a dive centre and a kids’ club, and is designed to suit families (official site / Accor official, as of August 2026). The airport is about 19 km away, and the official site says about 20 minutes by car (as of August 2026). This varies with road conditions. It suits families and couples who want to base themselves in Kuta Lombok for surfing or watching MotoGP.
The Oberoi Beach Resort, Lombok
A luxury resort on 97,124 m² (about 24 acres) of grounds at Medana Beach in Tanjung, in the northwest (official site, as of August 2026). It has luxury villas with private pools and luxury pavilions, with rooms of different views and sizes for each accommodation category. It has an infinity pool, a PADI-certified dive centre, a beach club (snorkelling, sea kayaking and paddleboards available), a spa and a private jetty, and it is also convenient in that the Gili Islands are about 15 minutes away by boat. On the other hand, the official site states plainly that it is 66 km from the airport, 1 h 45 min by car, which puts it among the farthest of Lombok’s major resorts (as of August 2026). Its self-contained design makes you feel almost no need to leave the grounds, and it is often chosen for honeymoons and anniversaries.
Sheraton Senggigi Beach Resort
A Marriott-group resort on the beach in Senggigi, at Jalan Raya Senggigi Km.8. Room categories are wide, from standard rooms to suites and beachfront villas with a private pool, and it has an outdoor pool and a children’s pool (with a free water slide), and four restaurants and bars (Bawang Putih / Kebun Anggrek / Senja / pool bar) (Marriott official, as of August 2026). It is about 50 km from the airport. The official airport shuttle must be reserved, and the Marriott official site lists Rp431,000 one way and Rp862,000 round trip (about US$24 / US$48, approximate) (as of August 2026). Prices may be revised, so please check when you book. It suits those who want to stay in Senggigi, “an area where you can walk to other restaurants,” but also value the reliability of a brand.
Holiday Resort Lombok
A resort on the beachfront in the Mangsit district, north of Senggigi. The difference from the other two properties is room size: a 76 m² beach bungalow, 32–35 m² ocean view rooms / grand deluxe, a 231 m² beach garden suite (with private pool) and a 135 m² two-bedroom Mangsit suite, so the floor area of the rooms themselves is generous. A dive centre and spa are also on site (official site, as of August 2026). For the travel time from the airport, the official site’s distance figures vary, so it is safe to take Sheraton in the same Senggigi district (about 50 km from the airport) as a reference and allow around 1 hour by car. It takes a few minutes by car to reach the cluster of restaurants in central Senggigi. It suits families who put room size first, and those planning a somewhat longer stay.
Katamaran Resort
A resort at the north end of Senggigi, in the Mangsit area (Jl. Raya Senggigi, Mangsit). The range runs from the standard “Premier Room” to Premier Suites, Ocean View Suites, upper categories such as the “Presidential Penthouse” and “Royal Penthouse,” and family two-bedroom suites and Tropical Pool Villas. It has three dining venues on site, The Sail Restaurant, The Kliff Bistro and a pool bar, and its location also offers a view across to Mount Agung on the Bali side (official site, as of August 2026). The official site does not state the travel time from the airport, so take Sheraton in the same Senggigi district (about 50 km from the airport) as a reference and allow around 1 hour by car. It takes a few minutes by car to reach the cluster of restaurants in central Senggigi.
Other major resorts
Besides the five properties above, there are a few others that get searched by name: for example, mid-sized boutique resorts such as Qunci Villas in the Mangsit district north of Senggigi (located on Jalan Raya Mangsit, taking bookings on its official site / as of August 2026), and small surf-oriented hotels around Kuta Lombok. However, the operating status and services of small properties change easily, so please check each property’s official site for the latest before booking. In every case, the basic tendency of location fits the character of one of the areas introduced in this article: Senggigi, Kuta or Tanjung. Before searching by an individual property name, deciding first which area’s atmosphere suits you makes it easier to narrow down the options.
Downsides of choosing a large resort
All the properties introduced so far are established resorts, but it would not be fair to tell only the good side. We also honestly tell you the downsides of large resorts that are easy to overlook.
- A design that makes it hard to go outside the grounds: pools, restaurants, spas and activities are built to be complete within the grounds, so there is naturally less chance to walk outside the grounds during your stay
- Some areas have nothing around: especially in suburban locations like Tanjung, there are almost no restaurants or shops within walking distance, and going out assumes arranging a car
- The transfer from the airport is long: at a property like the Oberoi, 66 km and 1 h 45 min by car from the airport, the transfer alone on arrival and departure days can take up nearly half a day
- Being near the circuit may mean noise: Novotel is adjacent to the Mandalika Circuit, so during race and event periods the noise may bother you
This is not to say that “large resorts are bad,” but that “there are trips a large resort suits and trips it does not.” If you want to feel the atmosphere of Lombok itself and local life, or keep travel time short, it is worth considering options other than a large resort.

Want a stay that is complete within the grounds?

YES
A large resort suits you
The five properties introduced in this article, such as Novotel, Oberoi and Sheraton, are candidates. This is for those who value the comfort of pools, restaurants and a spa all within the grounds.
NO
Also consider a small guesthouse or Sekotong
If you want to shorten travel time or have a stay closer to local life, options like Sekotong, introduced next, also come into view.
What suits you | Diagnosis by 4 types
We first summarise the conclusion for each of the 4 types in a figure.
Figure: Suitable resorts by 4 types
* Guides based on how each property’s official site presents itself (as of August 2026).
Families
Candidates are Novotel, with three outdoor pools and a kids’ club, or Holiday Resort Lombok if room size matters to you. In either case, it is wise to choose with access to the airport and to central Mataram in mind.
Honeymoon / anniversary trips
If you want privacy and a sense of escape, Oberoi is the strongest candidate. However, since the transfer is long at 1 h 45 min by car from the airport, we recommend a schedule that allows for travel fatigue on arrival day.
Surfers
The basic choice is the Kuta Lombok / Mandalika area, where the waves are close and airport access is good. Novotel is one of the few large resorts in this area with a wide variety of rooms.
Quiet / avoiding the bustle
Among the large resorts, Oberoi in Tanjung, with relatively large grounds and little commercial cluster, is the closest option to “quiet luxury.” However, if budget or access is limited, there is room to step outside the large-resort frame altogether and consider the small guesthouses described later.
An alternative to large resorts | The quiet of Sekotong
The flip side of the downsides of large resorts is small guesthouses of a few dozen rooms or fewer. Sekotong, in southwest Lombok where we are based, is an area that, unlike the large-resort clusters of Senggigi, Kuta/Mandalika and Tanjung introduced so far, has so far seen no large-scale development. The difference is not that “there is nothing outside the grounds,” but that “the very idea of grounds is faint, and the village and the sea are right next door.” Thinking at the area-selection stage about whether you put the convenience of a large resort or this quiet first makes it easier to avoid a mismatch. The features of Sekotong are introduced in more detail in the “Sekotong complete guide.”
If you line up the four areas by “bustle” and “closeness to the airport,” only Sekotong sits in a different position.
Figure: Where the four areas stand on bustle and access
* The axes are a qualitative placement based on the text and not a numerical scale (as of August 2026). This article does not state a travel time from the airport for Sekotong, so its vertical position in the figure is not a guide.
Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
Q. Which is the most popular resort in Lombok?
A. In terms of name recognition, the Oberoi Lombok is one of the internationally known luxury resorts, but the standard of “popular” changes with your area preferences. We recommend choosing to fit your purpose: Senggigi if budget or access matters, Novotel for families, and so on.
Q. What is the typical price of luxury hotels in Lombok?
A. It varies greatly by property and season, and within what we checked this time none of the properties’ official sites publishes a rate table. As a guide only, based on prices we checked on Booking.com / Agoda on 7 August 2026 (cheapest room type, 2 guests in 1 room, no breakfast), mid- to upper-class properties in the Senggigi / Kuta areas were around Rp1,200,000–3,000,000 per night for 2 guests (about US$67–169), and top-class properties like the Oberoi were from Rp5,000,000 (about US$281). In high season or for higher room categories, actual prices go well above this. When booking, check the latest rates on each property’s official site.
Q. Is the Oberoi Lombok far from the airport?
A. Yes. The official site states plainly “66 km from the airport, 1 h 45 min by car” (as of August 2026). It is among the farthest of the major resorts, so we recommend leaving slack in your schedule on arrival and departure days.
Q. Senggigi or Kuta Lombok, which is better for a first visit?
A. Senggigi has restaurants and shops within walking distance and the reliability of a long-established resort area. If you put surfing and Mandalika’s active atmosphere first, Kuta Lombok suits you. For closeness to the airport, Kuta Lombok (about 20 min at Novotel) has the advantage.
Q. Are there options other than large resorts?
A. Yes. In quiet areas without clusters of large resorts, such as Sekotong in southwest Lombok, small accommodations are scattered about. For those who want to avoid the bustle or have a stay closer to local life, these options are also worth considering.
If any of these areas interests you, please also see the following.

Summary | Decide the character of the area before the property name
Novotel, Oberoi, Sheraton, Holiday Resort and Katamaran are all established resorts, but the character of the area each stands in differs. Senggigi is a long-established resort area with clustered restaurants, Kuta/Mandalika is the south of the island for surfing and MotoGP, and Tanjung is an area dotted with quiet luxury resorts. Before searching by property name, deciding first which area’s atmosphere suits your trip makes comparison much easier.
