Do You Need a Visa for Indonesia? VOA vs e-VOA, Fees, How to Apply and Extending to 60 Days

Do you need a visa for Indonesia? It depends on your passport. Citizens of the ASEAN countries and a short list of others can enter visa-free for up to 30 days. Many other nationalities, Australians among them, use the Visa on Arrival (VOA): a 30-day tourist visa that costs Rp500,000 and can be bought at the airport or, as the e-VOA, online before you fly. Everyone else needs to arrange a visa before travelling.

This guide covers how to tell which group you are in, the difference between the VOA and the e-VOA, how to apply for the e-VOA, what it costs, how to stay longer than 30 days and what happens if you overstay. It is written with Bali and Lombok in mind, but the rules are the same at any Indonesian international airport. Everything here comes from pages of Indonesia’s Directorate General of Immigration and its regional offices, a foreign ministry notice and news reports that we opened in November 2026. Visa rules and fees change often, so check again just before you travel.

In short

If your nationality is eligible for the Visa on Arrival, you can buy it at the airport or online as an e-VOA. Both cost Rp500,000 (about US$28), allow 30 days and can be extended once for another 30 days. Apply for the e-VOA only on the official immigration site, evisa.imigrasi.go.id. A fee rise was announced in August 2026, but no start date had been published in the reports we found.

Do you need a visa for Indonesia?

Start with your passport. Indonesia treats visitors in three broad groups, and the group decides what you do before you fly.

Visa-free (visa exemption). Citizens of the ASEAN member states can enter visa-free for up to 30 days; the English Wikipedia article on Indonesia’s visa policy lists 19 countries with this status. Singapore’s embassy in Jakarta notes that this visa-free stay is for 30 days “without option to extend”. If you think you might stay longer than 30 days, you can choose the VOA instead, which can be extended.

Visa on Arrival (VOA or e-VOA). Citizens of a longer list of countries can buy a tourist visa on arrival or online in advance. A 2022 notice from Indonesian immigration explains that the VOA is for tourism, cannot be converted into another type of stay permit, and requires a passport valid for at least six months and a return or onward ticket. The list of eligible countries has changed several times, so check your nationality on the official eVisa site before you book.

Everyone else. If your country is on neither list, you need a visa issued before travel. Apply on the official eVisa site or ask an Indonesian embassy or consulate.

Buy a VOA at the airport, or an e-VOA online before you fly 3 Want more than 30 days? Choose the VOA or e-VOA, which can be extended once by 30 days 4 On neither list? VOA or e-VOA: what is the difference?

The VOA and the e-VOA are the same visa; the difference is when and where you get it. With the VOA you queue at a counter in the arrivals hall, pay, and then go through immigration. The 2022 immigration notice describes the counter as being before the immigration checkpoints and says you can pay in US dollars or rupiah. With the e-VOA you apply and pay online before departure, and at the airport you show the approved e-VOA with your passport.

Indonesian immigration explained in February 2023 that an e-VOA can be used to enter Indonesia within 90 days of being issued, that the 30-day stay counts from the day an officer stamps your entry, and that it can be extended once for another 30 days, for 60 days at most.

Fee as stated by the Director General of Immigration in August 2026 (“Our Visa on Arrival fee is currently only IDR 500,000”). US dollar figures use US$1 = Rp17,800 (September 2026). Check the official site before you travel.

The fee and the length of stay are the same, so the choice comes down to convenience. The e-VOA lets you finish the paperwork and payment before you leave and skip the visa counter queue at the airport. The VOA suits people whose plans are settled only at the last minute. The visa is issued by Indonesian immigration and is not specific to one island, so it is the same document whether you land in Bali or on Lombok.

Fee rise announced in August 2026

  • On 12 August 2026 the Director General of Immigration, Hendarsam Marantoko, announced plans to raise the e-VOA to Rp750,000 (about US$42) and the VOA bought on arrival to Rp1,000,000 (about US$56), to encourage online applications and shorten airport queues
  • Reports at the time (VisasNews, 12 August; Executive Traveller, 18 August) said no effective date had been set and the proposal still needed government approval. We did not find a start date in the sources we could open in November 2026
  • Check the fee shown on evisa.imigrasi.go.id when you apply. The Rp500,000 figures in this article apply until the change takes effect

How to apply for the e-VOA

Apply on the official site evisa.imigrasi.go.id, the address Indonesian immigration offices give in their own guidance. Other sites that offer to apply for you are not the government service. Check the address before you enter passport or card details.

Figure: Applying for the e-VOA

1 Create an account On evisa.imigrasi.go.id, register with your email address and choose the tourist Visa on Arrival 2 Enter trip and passport details Arrival date and airport, where you will stay, passport number and name, copied from your documents 3 Upload documents At least your passport photo page and proof of a return or onward ticket, as the form asks 4 Pay online Pay the fee shown on the site by card 5 Receive the approved e-VOA Keep the e-VOA on your phone and as a printout

Timing matters: the e-VOA must be used within 90 days of issue, so apply once your dates are fixed, a few weeks before you fly, not months ahead. Your passport should have at least six months of validity left when you arrive, and you will need a return or onward ticket. If you have not booked your onward travel yet, sort that out first.

Common snags are easy to avoid. Type your passport number and the name of your accommodation exactly as they appear on your documents. And if the e-VOA does not arrive in time, eligible travellers can still buy the VOA at the airport counter.

Staying longer than 30 days

A VOA or e-VOA can be extended once, for another 30 days, giving 60 days in total. The extension costs Rp500,000 and starts online on evisa.imigrasi.go.id. The immigration office in Yogyakarta says you can apply from 14 days before your current permit expires and should do so by one day before it expires at the latest. A ticket out of Indonesia is part of the requirements.

Since 29 May 2025 the extension can no longer be completed entirely online. After registering and uploading your documents, you must go to an immigration office to have your photo taken and for an interview; immigration says this applies to VOA holders too (Circular Letter IMI-417.GR.01.01 of 2025, announced on 28 May 2025). The Yogyakarta office says the photo is taken at the office nearest the address you entered, one working day after payment. On Lombok that means the immigration office in Mataram; see our guide to extending a visa on Lombok.

1 Days 1 to 30 The first 30 days count from your entry stamp 2 Apply to extend Online from 14 days before expiry, then a photo and interview at an immigration office 3 Days 31 to 60 One extension of 30 days, Rp500,000. No second extension Overstaying costs Rp1,000,000 a day Listed by the Manado immigration office (January 2026), about US$56 a day

Plan your dates with some margin. The immigration office in Manado lists the overstay penalty as Rp1,000,000 per day (January 2026). If you want to stay in Indonesia for longer than 60 days, the VOA is the wrong visa and you will need another type; our article on long stays on Lombok looks at the options.

At the airport

If you arrive with an e-VOA, go straight to the immigration line and show the approved e-VOA with your passport. If you are buying the VOA on arrival, pay at the VOA counter first and then join the immigration queue, so there are two queues instead of one; at busy times the first can take a while. For what happens after landing on Lombok, see our Lombok International Airport arrival guide.

Lombok has direct international flights only from Kuala Lumpur and Singapore, so many visitors enter Indonesia in Bali or Jakarta and then take a domestic flight. In that case you normally go through immigration where you first land, and the onward flight to Lombok is a domestic one. Our page on flights from Singapore and Kuala Lumpur to Lombok covers the direct routes.

A note from Sekotong

Our stay programme in Sekotong, in southwest Lombok, runs from 3 nights/4 days to 5 nights/6 days, so a single 30-day VOA or e-VOA comfortably covers it, even with a few days on Bali or the Gili Islands before or after. If you plan a longer trip, count your days from the entry stamp and leave room for the in-person extension step.

Frequently asked questions

Q. VOA or e-VOA: which should I choose?

They cost the same and give the same 30 days. The e-VOA lets you pay before you fly and skip the visa counter queue on arrival; the VOA suits last-minute plans. Use only the official site evisa.imigrasi.go.id for the e-VOA.

Q. Can I extend a visa-free stay?

Singapore’s embassy in Jakarta describes the visa-free stay as 30 days without the option to extend. If you might need more than 30 days, choose the VOA or e-VOA, which can be extended once.

Q. How do I stay for 60 days?

Enter on a VOA or e-VOA and extend it once before the first 30 days run out. Since 29 May 2025 the extension requires a visit to an immigration office for a photo and interview after you apply online.

Q. What happens if I overstay?

The Manado immigration office lists a penalty of Rp1,000,000 for each day of overstay (January 2026). Leave a margin in your plans.

Q. Is the fee going up?

In August 2026 the Director General of Immigration announced plans for Rp750,000 for the e-VOA and Rp1,000,000 for the VOA on arrival. The reports we found gave no start date. Check the fee shown on the official site when you apply.

Summary

Whether you need a visa for Indonesia depends on your nationality. ASEAN citizens and a few others can enter visa-free for 30 days, without an extension. Travellers from countries on the VOA list can buy a 30-day tourist visa for Rp500,000 at the airport or as an e-VOA online, and extend it once for a total of 60 days, with an in-person photo and interview at an immigration office since May 2025.

The fee may rise to Rp750,000 for the e-VOA and Rp1,000,000 on arrival, as announced in August 2026, and lists of eligible countries change. Check the official site evisa.imigrasi.go.id just before you travel, and apply there rather than through an agency.
