Size and atmosphere: the island of balance and the island of silence

Of the three islands – Gili Trawangan, Gili Air and Gili Meno – Gili Air is right in the middle in size and the closest to mainland Lombok. It doesn’t have Trawangan’s buzz, but it has a good range of cafés and restaurants, and it’s popular with digital nomads and workation travellers who stay for days or weeks using the Wi-Fi. Its biggest strength is its balance: “not too quiet, not inconvenient”.

Gili Meno, on the other hand, is the smallest and least developed of the three. At night the whole island becomes remarkably quiet, and far fewer places to eat stay open than on Air or Trawangan. That very “nothingness” is the reason people choose Meno, and it has loyal fans among honeymooners and travellers who “want to get completely away from the noise of cities and tourist hotspots”.

Getting there: from mainland Lombok, Bali and Gili Trawangan

There are no cars or motorbikes on either Gili Air or Gili Meno, so you’ll arrive by boat. There are three main routes.

1. From mainland Lombok (Bangsal / Teluk Nare harbours): the standard route is the public boat from the harbours on Lombok’s northwest coast. Gili Air is the closest of the three islands to the mainland, so the crossing is short. The boat ride to Gili Meno is a little longer than to Air.

2. From Bali (direct fast boat): most fast boats from Serangan, Sanur, Padang Bai, Amed and elsewhere mainly serve Gili Trawangan, but some companies also call directly at Gili Air or Gili Meno. Departure and arrival points, journey times and facilities vary by operator, so it’s worth comparing in advance. For all the ways to get from Bali to Lombok, see our comparison Bali to Lombok: Flights, Fast Boats and the Public Ferry Compared.

3. Island hopping from Gili Trawangan: if you’re already staying on Gili Trawangan and want to visit Air or Meno, the public shared boats that link the islands are handy. Air and Meno are very close together. The public boat between the islands runs about twice a day (leaving Gili Air at 8:30 and 15:00), costs around Rp35,000–45,000 per person (about US$2–2.50) and takes about 15 minutes to the next island. If you want more flexibility with timing, you can also take a fast boat (around Rp85,000, about US$4.80, one way, with frequent departures between about 8:00 and 17:00 – Lonely Planet, July 2026) or an on-demand private water taxi.

How you’ll spend your time: activities compared

Gili Air has snorkelling spots where you’re likely to encounter sea turtles, and in parts of the island a community-led coral restoration effort is under way. It’s easy to plan a day with a nice rhythm: beach and snorkelling in the daytime, then relaxing in cafés and restaurants from late afternoon. More and more places to stay have reliable Wi-Fi, so it also suits a style of travel where you “sightsee but also work for a few days or weeks”.

On Gili Meno, the main sights are the salt lake on the west side of the island and a donation-funded sea turtle sanctuary. At the sanctuary you can see the pools where hatchlings are raised, and depending on the time of year you may be able to watch a release. Offshore, the installation “The Nest” by sculptor Jason deCaires Taylor has been sunk on the seabed, and some people visit it by snorkelling or diving. Arguably Meno’s greatest luxury is having “no particular plans” in the evening.

Good to know

  • Don’t count on an ATM on Gili Meno: some sources say there is none, while a traveller’s blog from April 2026 reported one next to the harbour. Get cash while you’re on the mainland, Gili Air or Gili Trawangan.
  • Getting around is on foot or by horse cart (cidomo) only: there are no cars or motorbikes, so allow extra time if you’re heading to a beach far from where you’re staying.
  • Gili Meno has few places to eat: if your accommodation has no restaurant, it’s reassuring to check early where you’ll have dinner.
  • Cancellations due to sea and weather conditions: especially in the rainy season (roughly November to March), boats between the islands and to the mainland may be cancelled or delayed. Leave slack in any itinerary with connections.

🏝️ A word from us in Sekotong

Sekotong, where we’re based, is in the southwest of Lombok – the opposite side from the Gili Islands. It isn’t an “island” like Gili Meno, but as a quiet stretch of coast that hasn’t been over-developed, it has a similar feel. If you love the quiet of Gili Meno, we plan to introduce the little-visited cluster of small islands off Sekotong (the southern Gilis) in future articles too. (As of August 2026)

CAFÉS AND CONVENIENCE

Gili Air is for you

For those who want a relaxed stay with a choice of cafés and restaurants, anyone planning a long stay or workation of days to weeks, and couples and families.

COMPLETE QUIET

Gili Meno is for you

For those who don’t need any nightlife and want to spend their time on a truly quiet beach, and anyone looking for a special island for a honeymoon or anniversary trip.

“Island hopping” to both is perfectly realistic, since Air and Meno are so close together. Staying a few nights on one island and visiting the other as a day trip is another option.

Frequently asked questions

Q. For a first visit to the Gili Islands, which do you recommend: Air or Meno?

If it’s your first time and you’re unsure about the choice of places to eat and stay, the well-balanced Gili Air is the safer bet. If what you really want is “a truly quiet island”, it’s well worth choosing Gili Meno.

Q. How much cash do I need on Gili Meno?

Some sources say there’s no ATM on the island, while a traveller’s blog (April 2026) reported one next to the harbour, so don’t rely on it: you’ll need to get enough cash for your whole stay beforehand on the mainland, Gili Air or Gili Trawangan. Few places accept credit cards, so bring more than you think you’ll need.

Q. Can I stay on both Gili Air and Gili Meno?

Yes. Air and Meno are only about 15 minutes apart by public boat, so spending the first half of your trip on Air and the second half on Meno is a popular combination.

Q. Can I go diving and snorkelling on both islands?

Yes, on both. Air is known for spots where you can meet sea turtles, and Meno for sites such as the underwater sculpture “The Nest”. Check the latest local information on dive shops and tours before you go.

Q. Can I rent a car or motorbike?

No. Cars and motorbikes are banned on both islands, so you get around on foot or by horse cart (cidomo).
